Mike_and_Goddess

THE STORY SO FAR:
The world has ended, but five (well, it’s complicated) humans get a chance to do it over, and make things right. Only problem is, for their second go around, they're not going to be 'human'...

Kosuzu, Reimu, Akyuu and Youmu have all remembered their pasts, and through significant trials and tribulations, begun the path of fighting against the doomed future. Of the five Immaterial Children who were wound back in time together, only one’s fate remains unknown - the former magician, Kirisame Marisa.

In this life, she is Houjuu Marisa, raised on the island of Sado in the outside world. Spending her childhood years looking up at the stars, the arrival of the Spiral Comet awoke her inhuman heritage - one she was completely unaware of, and equally unprepared to deal with. Having fled her life on the island, she now searches for a way to get to Gensokyo, ever chased by a mysterious group.

She is not the only one exploring the mysteries of the city she now finds herself in - she is joined by Goutokuji Mike, a young maneki-neko of the modern world also on the run from home. Together, they discovered the Lunar Rainbow Market, and with the assistance of powerful benefactors managed to evade their pursuers.

Their time at the Scarlet Talent Agency ended poorly, yet not fruitlessly - not only were they joined by fellow mystery-hunter Kotohime, but a mysterious shadow of a witch managed to contact the young Houjuu, and point her on the path towards discovering her nature and purpose. This has proven to be another pain point for Mike, who feels herself falling behind the young changeling and wants to catch up. Perhaps the Vanishing Path and the prisoner of the shrine it conceals will give her a chance to prove herself…

“The first thing we should ask is, well, how did you get trapped here in the first place?” Marisa said. “I mean, I’m guessing you want us to free you, but-”

“But it would be foolish to open the cage unknowing of the beast within.” The woman nodded in agreement. “I can make no promises, but I will tell you what I can.”

She paused, thinking back. “My capture was the denouement of a fierce battle, if I remember correctly. Sadly, I never got the name of the one who struck me down, and nor can I divine the exact reason we were fighting. I remember more than my fair share of tumultuous places and times - battles were commonplace.”

“Is that right?” Kotohime muttered, looking at the sealed spirit. “...I swear, you seem familiar. Have we met before?”

Marisa gave the phantom a closer look. Now that she mentioned it, something about the shadowed face was familiar. It turned to an apologetic expression as the woman shook her head. “If we met in the past, I have no recollection of it. My apologies.”

“Mmmm.” Kotohime hummed in thought, still staring at the woman. “I see.”

“Maybe the sealing’s meant to make you lose your memories.” Mike’s voice was a whisper. “Are… are you okay? Those thorns look painful.”

The prisoner stared at the thorns around her wrists. “The thorns are an aftermath of the battles between me and my jailer. We have regular bouts, on nights when the moon is strongest.” The prisoner stood up, turning to survey the grounds. “I’d endure their pain for a thousand years to escape this place, but it’d be best if you kept well clear. They’d sap your strength at the touch.”

Marisa had been wondering about that. She wasn’t curious enough to try touching them, but she was glad to know enough that she’d been right to be careful. She turned her gaze to the hackjob carved through the bushes around the side building. “Even your jailer’s not immune to it, huh…?”

The prisoner managed a small chuckle. “The closest thing I have to entertainment is watching her deal with the mess. Ghastly woman. Playing at a miko while dancing to the So-called Devil’s tune, and she has the nerve to-”

She stopped, before sighing. “Apologies. I won’t waste my breath pretending a prisoner can give an uncoloured opinion on their captor. Just know- I pray you won’t meet her for yourselves.”

Kotohime nodded, doubt written plain on her face. “If you say so.” She paused, looking over the bushes. “Using thorns to drain people… what a terrible power.”

“Indeed. And even if one manages to make it through there, you have the outer seals - robust and regularly maintained.” She gave a thoughtful gaze to Kotohime. “You may be fine, milady, but your charges would not - any youkai would be blown back, almost certainly landing in the wicked thicket.”

“Even if we tried to help, we’d get hurt?” Mike’s ears folded back, looking sadly at the trapped woman. “You’re really trapped… I-I don’t know if there’s anything I can do.”

“Perhaps it’s not impossible.” The prisoner gave a small smile. “Especially with a brave young maneki-neko like yourself.”

She turned around. “If I’m careful and take my time, I can make a small tunnel through the thorn bushes. Small enough for a little kitten to slip through, without the hole being noticed by my jailer. The seals, though…” She sighed. “They’re made entirely for the purpose of containing me, so I can offer no aid in breaking through them. You’ll need to find your own way past.”

The catgirl hesitated. “But… even if I get past that, what can I hope to do? If this is only the second line of defense-”

“It’s the last line of defense,” the spirit corrected. “The seals within the building have decayed greatly, and would offer no real resistance to any enterprising soul. If you can manage to open the door, freeing me from there would be trivial - and once unbound, I’ll be able to clear a proper path for escape, so we can all leave this broken temple far behind.”

“That’s if we decide to help.” Kotohime reminded. “We still know basically nothing about you, after all. If we go digging and we find out you were lying to us… we won’t be freeing you from this.”

“But I want to help!”

Marisa looked at her friend. Mike was clutching at her chest. “I-I don’t know if I can promise that I’ll be able to free you…” the nekomata turned her head up, determined. “But I promise, I’ll do everything I can!”

After a moment, the islander nodded in agreement. “Yeah. We can’t promise anything, but we’ll go digging, look for some information. Maybe we can tell you some of those things you forgot or at least make things more comfortable for you. We can do that much, right?”

The prisoner sagged, slightly. “It has been years since I’ve had even this much hope. The thought of you turning me away is -” She paused, before regathering herself. “No… before this night, even the slightest bit of aid seemed impossible. I will just have to trust that you will be able to keep your faith - that this meeting is fate, not fortune. And if you decide that simple aid is all you can or should do, then I will just have to accept it. Regardless, thank you for giving me a chance.”

She paused, before looking out into the distance. The faintest hint of light could be seen, down by the road. “I suspect our time has run out, and my power is very much spent. Be safe, all three of you… and I hope to see you again soon.”

The phantasmal woman became even more translucent, smiling at the trio. Even as her body faded, she managed to tousle Mike’s ears one more time… and then she was gone.

Marisa gave a small grin to her friend. “Sounds like you’ve got some work to do, Mike.”

The catgirl nodded, her gaze locked on the shrine - once again back to it’s inert state. “Mmm. Miss Goddess… I’ll find a way to free you, I promise.”

Her focus was only broken when the policewoman’s hand landed on her shoulder. “You kids…” Kotohime sighed. “Let’s get to the car. We need to have a talk.”

...Thorns?

Although Mima, you might be fooling the kids, you ain't fooling us!

Even the Capcha knows who imprisoned you!

...Although I do gotta wonder if Mima will actually do something bad, considering despite being an evil spirit, she's basically nothing but a petty troublemaker after Reimu gives her some smacks.

Since everything this so-called "spirit/goddess" tells us could either be a total lie or the full truth about her situation and her jailer "Miko," there are a few suspects on the list:

- Mima (the most obvious suspect and who most people believe it is, myself included)
- Yuuka (she was supposedly defeated during her incident, and there's been no mention of what happened to her)
- Byakuren (not too likely, since she's supposedly sealed in Makai)
- Eternity (because of her backstory, she could fit into the goddess category)

This is probably not Mima, actually. Unless I'm missing something critical.

See, I'm still banking on Mima because this "goddess" doesn't have a lower body, which is a trait shared by...literally just Mima and Tojiko.

I don't think it's Yuuka, because she was fended away by the Moriyas, rather than the Hakurei...who is the only Miko around, since Sanae is MIA.

It also definitely isn't Byakuren, she's busy chilling in Makai and has not left.

Might be Eternity, though.

I don't think her hair color is mentioned though, in the drawing those seem to be plant vines more than anything?

My guess if it really is green hair would be Yuuka but if she was sealed it wouldn't have been a long time ago, unless she's lying about that? Then again she would have sunflowers and not roses or whatever these flowers are.

All the plant vine stuff makes me think it's Hisami but I really doubt this is her here? Or maybe Zanmu freed her in the original timeline and so she got a stalker loyal follower for herself?

Oops, didn’t realize those were vines.

Hisami has eggplant motifs, so it probably isn’t her. Don’t know much about Hisami tho.

My bets are on either Mima—hasn't appeared yet, had a relationship of some sort with the previous Marisa—or maybe Yuuka—overly mysterious and suspicious, plus an association with plants. Or it could be an original character.

I would also like to remind everyone that there is also a horned creature that appears on nights of the full moon, that we haven’t seen yet.

Maybe it's Kasen's arm? Both Kasen and her oni side on her tabard have a flower. Plus, besides looking for the Hakurei heir, Kasen also said she'd be busy with something dangerous.

That’s a cool idea! The mystery goddess mentioned a “Demon” that the Miko was working for…given that “demon” is sometimes used to refer to Oni, she being Kasen’s Arm isn’t impossible.

I hope we do end up seeing this miko that's mentioned. Maybe her jailor even is Kasen dressed as a miko if this ends up being Kasen's arm, with Kasen "playing at a miko while dancing to the So-called Devil’s tune"

Oh, huh, "Devil" is capitalised as a proper noun there, isn't it? So it's probably a name of some kind. So if we're limiting speculation to canon characters...

... is that idiot the Scarlet Devil at it again somehow? Remi...

Yeah, when it comes to so-called devils, Remi is the first one to come to mind. The question then becomes why she'd have a miko on her payroll, even a fake one. Kind of goes against her aesthetic.

>>214397
The other option is maybe Shinki? "Goddess of Devil's World," after all. Also a lot more likely to have a shrine maiden serving her.

Though Ms. Prisoner here sounds to me like she thinks that working for a "Devil" conflicts with being a miko. That sounds like a westerner's involved. For Shinto, usually a devil is still a god and still ought to be worshipped. Wasn't there (buried somewhere in the print works, maybe?) a scene where Remilia is bemused by that cultural difference? Genuine question, I distinctly remember it but can't find it anywhere, canon or fanon. So either our Devil is European and positioned against the gods, or Ms. Prisoner thinks like a European that they ought to be ... maybe, I think, possibly.

Maybe Remi just wants to try out being revered as a divinity who merely happens to be evil and dangerous, instead of reviled as antithetical to holiness? Yeah, I don't know.

Out of curiosity, who else were fightable in Dim Dream? Something about Kotohime saying that the girl looks "familiar" is giving me some weird hint that she looks like someone Kotohime met before, which as far as the timeline Gooboi has given us, was in PoDD minus the Hakurei Miko (in this case, Haru) and Mima. Unless winning PoDD gave Kotohime the ability to see the previous timelines (the canon timeline and the one that happened before Redo), then it could've only been someone in PoDD for Kotohime to be familiar with her look but not know it in the first place, right?

Well, Chiyuri and Yumemi have already been introduced, so it’s not them.

Gensokyo!Chiyuri is more of a gag character. She hasn’t shown up yet, however, so who knows what she’s doing?

Ellen is pretty much out of the question, as she is an eternal child with memory problems.

Kana isn’t much of a threat to anything, so I don’t think it’s her.

Rikako is the most likely, being a powerful human magician, and a direct threat to Gensokyo’s safety due to her interest in science.

Unfortunately, none of these characters’ personalities line up with our supposed goddess.

Miko

“Look, all I’m saying is you need to be cautious about these things,” Kotohime said, as she lead the two girls down the stairs. “You can’t just be trusting anyone you meet.”

Marisa gave her a cheeky grin. “Awwww, why not?”

“Because you can’t just go walking up to tandom strangers and going along with whatever they say.” The police officer raised a finger. “Now-”

“You sure about that?” The changeling’s grin only got wider. “Iunno, it’s worked pretty well for me so far.”

Kotohime gave her a flat look. “I’m being serious, Marisa. If you see something suspicious, you should keep a safe distance.”

“Miss Kotohime?” Mike leant around the officer’s other side, a mischievous gleam in her eyes. “Well… I’d like to point out that the last time we saw something suspicious… it was a red-headed woman with a grappling hook. Back at the STA.”

The red-headed woman in question opened her mouth long before she actually had a reply to the catgirl’s comment. After all, she’d already confirmed how valuable the girl’s reckless assistance had been. Marisa chuckled, jumping in before Kotohime found her words.

“Well, that’s different, Mike. Of course it is.” The islander nodded sagely, being careful to watch her footing as they started a second flight. “After all, we met Little_Bunny online.”

“That’s true, actually. I hadn’t seen considered that…” Mike hummed, deep in mock thought. She hopped a few steps forward, spinning around in front of the other two. “Though we should check, to be safe. Officer Kotohime, is it okay to approach strangers if you meet them online first?”

The look the policewoman gave her in response was enough for both of the kids to crack up laughing. “Good to see you two are in better spirits, but this is serious, all right?”

She paused, turning to look back up the hill. “This isn’t some random passerby on the street. She was locked up in a prison almost impossible to find, and actively guarded.”

The nekomata puffed out her cheeks. “But that doesn’t mean she did anything wrong, does it?”

“Not necessarily,” Kotohime conceded, “but whether it’s the prisoner or the guard, what it does mean is that someone here is very dangerous. And if that person saw two kids wandering in, and decided to have catgirl with a side of calamari, it’s quite possible you’d never be found again.”

The younger mystery-hunters shared a nervous glance at that, as the policewoman watched to make sure her message hit home. “Look, until we know who she is, we have to be cautious. And we can afford to be - for better or worse, if she’s been trapped here this long, that’s where she’s gonna stay - her captors . So we can take our time and find out the full truth before we act.”

“...Yeah, okay.” Marisa gave a nervous chuckle. “We’ll be cautious, I promise. Don’t wanna go planning things out like we know her already, after all.”

A thought occurred to her. “Although… you said something about meeting her before, right? Do you recognise her?”

Kotohime hummed. “Mmmmm… vaguely. I’d swear I’ve seen her before, but I meet a lot of people in a lot of places, here and in Gensokyo. …I could just be mistaken.”

The trio walked through the shimmering barrier, Marisa feeling more than a bit relieved to see that nothing kept them locked in. Mike started to respond, but her ears perked up. “Another car’s parking. Just a bit up the road.”

“A car stopping here?” The changeling paused. “Wait, the prisoner said-”

“That we were running out of time,” the officer finished. “This must be why. Her jailer’s come back.”

She stopped the two girls, a cloud pooling under her feet. “Let’s be careful here, alright? See if we can get a good view of this jailer of hers from a safe distance.”

Marisa nodded, kneeling down as the cloud began to lift them up. What was the cloud made of, anyways? It was obviously solid enough for the whole thing to lift them up, but it didn’t even feel wet, so it clearly wasn’t made of water. Was it just pure magic, shaped like a cloud? Maybe something danmaku-adjacent?

The cloud flew regardless, because it clearly didn’t care about explaining itself to a young changeling. She had no choice but to leave that question for later, and fish out some more of the Seed of Unknown Form cards. Kotohime raised an eyebrow as Marisa dropped a seed on each of them, but seemed to figure out it was part of her magic without asking. Soon, the trio found themselves looking down at a fancy-looking car, one the islander could only guess was some exotic imported model.

Especially when she saw the familiar redhead climbing out of the driver’s seat.

“Like I said,” Kokoa started, as she shut the car door, “there’s nobody else we could’ve reached tonight to clean up that mess. Saved us a lot of frantically pulling up tarps and the like.”

“I’m always happy to repay my debts to Lady Remilia, even in this indirect way.” It took Marisa a moment to realise that whoever spoke was leaning into the open boot of the car. “Just remember that my efforts can only go so far. Make sure Minnie’s booked a proper renovation team by the time you get back, alright?”

“Trust me, as soon as she hung up on you, she called for repairs.” Kokoa gave a small chuckle. “We’re not Lady Patchouli’s familiars for no reason.”

“Right… ‘the supernatural and naturally superb’,” her passenger replied. “...do you think that kid you mentioned will be okay?”

“Who knows…” The imp sighed, joining the woman at the back. “Never thought I’d be hoping to see that lunatic again, but she’s the only person I’ve got contact details for.”

The officer hummed, leaning over and whispering to herself as she pulled the cloud over to the treeline. “I’m hoping to speak to you too… quite curious how the STA’s wrapped up in all this.” She made a small smirk. “And you’re not gonna catch me off guard this time.”

The passenger took a few steps back from the boot, carrying a massive straw hat in her hands, and letting the skybound onlookers see her more fully. She had on the standard red hakama, with a white robe on top, marking her unmistakably as the Miko the prisoner had been talking about. Her hair was a silvery grey, and in the light of the boot, Marisa could see her face-

Kotohime went rigid, cursing under her breath. Marisa turned to look, seeing the colour drain from the policewoman’s face. Her hands were digging into the clouds, as she stared at the miko, unblinking.

“Is that…”

There was only so much that could make a police officer break into a cold sweat. As the two girls stared at their guardian, a feeling of dread settled over the group.

Marisa turned her head back, but the woman had already placed the large hat on her head. Ofuda hang off it, meaning it was likely some form of protection - but Marisa couldn’t help but notice how the hat would do a good job of hiding her face even if they were level with her.

She turned back to the luggage compartment, before pausing. “For Oroha Chizuru… wait, this box, is it-”

“You know it.” Kotohime grinned. “They finished it just a few days ago, actually. We figured we could send it all over as one.”

“And you didn’t pack this in with the general provisions?”

“We made space for it, but we thought you’d like to take a look, get a feel for it.” There was the sound of a box being clicked open. “After all, we don’t want her finding out that you’ve got something extra-special for this month’s bout.”

“...And this is outside the zone, so she won’t see a thing we do now.” The woman Marisa guessed was Chizuru nodded. “Let’s take a look, and see if the smiths truly lived up to their reputation.”

“Wouldn’t be on our contact list if they weren’t!” Kokoa pulled out a flat case, turning it to the miko. The imp fumbled around with its middle, her fingers eventually managing to flip the latch.

The two kids leaned in, over the cloud’s edge. Within the case… was a blade, glittering with an unearthly light. The miko picked it up, admiring its ethereal sheen.

“It’s incredible.” There was a small smile on her lips, as she examined the length of the blade. “An astonishing replica… and the magic’s been preserved in the reforging.”

There was a few moments of silence, as the jailer gave it a few swings. Kokoa watched her, keeping a wide berth. “...Now, it’s worth saying, we don’t think that’s gonna be enough to do her in.”

“It doesn’t need to,” was the immediate response. “If this magic was enough to kill her, we wouldn’t be here in the first place.”

In the reflection of the blade, Marisa saw red eyes gleaming. “All it needs to do is be a third and final lock. Come the next full moon, we’ll have our final bout… and she will never escape again.”

The eyes blinked, before focusing on the cloud’s reflection. Chizuru turned her head up, but by the time she looked, the cloud was already gone.

The occupants of the police car were dead silent. Even the radio had been switched off, presumably to let Kotohime think. She rapped her fingers on the steering wheel, driving the car more out of instinct and habit than any dedicated thought.

Mike and Marisa were in the back seat, the anxiety filling the air. The changeling had offered her hand to her friend; the catgirl was squeezing it tight, her anxiety obvious.

“Marisa…” she whispered at last. “...How long until the full moon?”

“Two weeks,” was the instant reply. “Last full moon was a few nights after the Spiral Meteor.”

She gave Mike what she hoped was a reassuring smile. “We’ll figure it out, okay? We got a whole fortnight, we can figure out a way to sneak in there-”

“No.” Kotohime’s voice was shaking, but it had a firmness to it. “You’re not going back there.”

The two kids blinked, turning to the front seat.

“If that’s who I thought it was…” The police officer hesitated, but hardened her voice. “Don’t ever go back. It’s too dangerous.”

“But the goddess-”

“Whoever she is, they’re willing to do whatever it takes to seal her permanently. There has to be a reason for that… there has to be…” Kotohime’s voice trailed off, deep in thought.

“Who is that woman, Koto?” Marisa watched as the police officer stiffened. “You recognised her, right?”

“Mmm. She’s very dangerous.” The officer’s grip on the steering wheel tightened. “The prime suspect in a grim case, who disappeared before I got to the truth of the matter.”

“What case-”

“I’m not about to discuss cold cases with a pair of kids!” She slammed her fist on the inside of the door. The car fell quiet again, as she sighed. “Look, this has stopped being just… the usual mystery-hunting, alright? This is a matter of life and death, and I am not letting you go back in there.”

“But you don’t have a clue where it is!” Marisa protested. “You couldn’t see the barrier until I walked you inside!”

“Yeah, and you can’t hear her, either!” Mike’s tail was puffed out. “How do you expect to get back to the vanishing path?”

“There’s one good chance,” the police officer started, “if all else fails. The night of the full moon.”

She raised a finger. “They both made it clear they plan to fight on the full moon. Maybe… maybe that’s when the Vanishing Path normally appears, because they put all their energy into the fight. And it’s only on ‘moonlit’ nights just because of how hard it is to see from the road, through all the foliage. That’s my theory, anyways.”

Marisa growled. “Even if that’s true, that’s leaving things to the literal last minute-”

“-which gives me time to spend investigating.” Kotohime nodded to herself, buoyed by her own logic. “Find a countermeasure of my own - and grill a few of the Scarlets on what the hell they’re doing.

“Regardless,” she said, “that doesn’t change that this isn’t anything I want either of you near, alright? End of discussion.”

Mike tried to climb out of her seat. “But-”

Marisa’s hand stopped her. “Mike… we’re not gonna win this.”

She turned back to the driver. “Kotohime… we’re staying at the Lunar Rainbow Market right now, like I said earlier. If you’re going to be looking for a way in, they might have something that can help.”

The policewoman raised an eyebrow as she continued. “Just promise us two things. One, if you find a way in early, go in as soon as you can, and two… tell us if the jailbird is innocent in all this, as soon as you know. Please?”

Kotohime sighed. “...As long as you promise that, no matter what, neither of you are gonna try and get to the Vanishing Path again.”

“I promise,” Marisa said, nodding solemnly. “You promise too, right Mike?”

“Wh-” Mike started, but faltered when she saw her friend’s expression. “If… you’re sure…” Kotohime looked doubtful, but took that as confirmation enough to nod and keep driving.

After all, in the darkness of the car, she’d have needed night vision to see Marisa wink.

[ ] When they got back, tell Chimata and Nio everything, including (once Kotohime had left) their plans to go back to the Vanishing Path. They might have some ideas of what to do, and honest eagerness might encourage honest responses, even if they were hard opposition.
[ ] Ask them about the Vanishing Path, but frame it as mere investigation to help Kotohime out. Whether they’d believe that under these circumstances was… a gamble, but it’d let them ask questions without arousing suspicion.
[ ] Keep any investigation under wraps. Claim trust in Kotohime and leave it at that. Probably was gonna be a tough sell, but if it did work there was unlikely to be anyone else they knew trying to stop them.

You had me at gamble.

But anyways, now we have some extra info about who this goddess is, and something powerful enough to need *three* seals from Patchy's familiars is definitely not something to be messed with. Kotohime sudden snap was definitely not expected, but it adds to the gravity of the situation. Now, I *would* say trust the stranger you just met a few hours ago to pull through with what you two promised, except Kotohime just said *not* to do that, so I guess that's what we're doing.

So, that might be...

Sakuya (Possible, but it doesn't match from how she's talking)
Nemuno (Might be possible, But I don't see why she'd be present...and also how she talks.)

Or Keine, the (formerly) wanted woman responsible for the "vanishing" of "4" babies. Now that would be a case that Kotohime wouldn't want to talk to some kids about.

Because, despite the capcha, I don't think that's Momiji, and I honestly can't see any of the other silver/grey haired characters. Might be Sariel, but why the heck would she be up here?

No, I'd bet on Keine. Full Moon, after all, and her powers would be perfect for a temporary fix.

Fuck the police! Okay, Kotohime's actually exactly right here, getting a pair of idiot kids involved in whatever this is is stupidly dangerous. But first of all that's not much of a story, second not doing that isn't actually an option, and third of all I genuinely think she'll fuck it up one way or another if it's just her, so let's at least get a more competent authority figure involved. As opposed to someone we've already seen engage in "it's okay if I break the the law, I am the law!" behaviour. I love Kotohime, but the woman who repeatedly attempted to break and enter without a warrant because she wanted to play with her toys is not a responsible investigator. Not that adding vigilantism on top of badge-wearing-borderline-vigilantism usually improves things, but...

Anyway, let's take stock of the situation again. Shrine maiden with silver hair - a Miyadeguchi? "For Oroha Chizuru," though... we haven't come across that name before, have we? Is it the shrine maiden's name? Is it the pseudonym the Scarlets used to order the sword? And there's probably something important about her face, just because it's hidden. Not to say she's hiding it for an important reason, just that narratively since it was blocked from sight, there's reasonably good odds of it being important (to Marisa, or us) somehow. She's also the prime suspect in "a grim case" who disappeared, and Kotohime think's she's dangerous. That's spectacularly unhelpful.

I assume the smiths aren't people we should know, since the only canonical blacksmith I can recall is Kogasa, and it seems fairly unlikely that a nebulous group of smiths on the Outside is a single Gensokyo resident. Could still be other Ippon-Datara, or considering how highly rated they are, some sword god like Futsunushi or a metalworker god like... goddamnit, is it the Moriya Shrine again? The sword is apparently one with some history behind it, which may point back at Ibaraki-Douji, like some people were speculating earlier - the famous Onikiri was important in sealing her, in canon. And then the default suspect for magical Japanese swords are Masamune and Muramasa... Muramasa's swords have a reputation for being devilish, which on the one hand, Scarlets, and on the other, being used in a sealing ritual.

Ah, wait, I just noticed. “If this magic was enough to kill her, we wouldn’t be here in the first place.” Which means this sword was used against her before. Which leds some strong odds to this being The Arm.

Hmm. The mythical Nue was finished off with a sword, but it's usually Yorimasa's bow that shot it out of the air that's considered the important bit. And it would raise so many questions if this was somehow Nue. Other than that, have we seen Suika recently? There's another one that was supposed to have been killed with a sword. But no, I think encountering Kasen earlier was foreshadowing/set-up, and this is her arm.

If anyone in the world should know if someone’s deal is sus, it’s Chimata. Besides, we need a third opinion on this. Chimata is a god of special markets, places where people buy and sell odd goods. Like maybe, a certain dangerous sword?

...Guys, I'm really starting to think the "Miko" is Keine.

Think about it:

1. Has a power capable of making temporary "repairs". Keine's powers would work wonders at undoing damage for a short time, as she was able to hide the entire Human Village once.

2. Was able to tell the replica magic blade was damn near identical to the original, and that as a result it wouldn't be enough to kill the "goddess". Keine is both a learned history teacher and also a Were-hakutaku, if someone were to be able to compare an original that is not there to a replica, it would be her.

3. White hair, not a lot of 2hus out there with White/Silver/Gray, and she's hiding her identity.

4. A decent combatant, as shown by being an EX midboss and (former) guardian for the Village.

5. The "horned demon" is in this area, and Keine grows horns and gains her full power...when? During the full moon, where the next battle, and apparently this sealing, is set to begin.

6. Kotohime recognized her on sight! Keine is perhaps the most infamous criminal in Gensokyo right now. Of course Kotohime, Police Princess, would seek to capture her to try and save the Immaterial Children! Even if she thinks Keine is innocent, she would want to investigate...and with her age, Kotohime would have been too young to do anything when Keine got chased out. And of course, as a Police officer, keeping a pair of children near a "known kidnapper" is a big fat NO.

I know it's not either of the majority opinions, but think of the tantalizing reward if we pull it off: if we sneak out after asking pointed questions they have a trail to follow. If we sneak out without a trail, we're completely anonymous to their radar. Keep our secrets secret.

Ok, so I did some digging into the "Oroha Chizuru" name and...

As far as my admittedly limited abilities go, it's 100% completely fake.

Now, Chizuru works, it's a known given and family name and means Thousand Cranes and references the legend of folding 1000 cranes within a year to be granted a wish.

On the other hand, Oroha is nonsense as far as I can figure out. The only thing it references is a nail + nail polish business, and it's not unheard of for businesses to have names that are strictly meaningless or nonsensical by their written symbols. Whether there is a deeper meaning, pun or reference there, I don't know.

It is, however, worth noting that Google kept spitting "Iroha" at me instead, which is another very common name/surname.

Further, the Iroha is reference to an extremely famous and important Japanese poem, the Iroha. A perfect pangram (uses each of the language's symbol only once, essentially a literary anagram) and a basis of syllabary ordering.

For the full poem, here's a translation:

Although its scent still lingers on
the form of a flower has scattered away
For whom will the glory
of this world remain unchanged?
Arriving today at the yonder side
of the deep mountains of evanescent existence
We shall never allow ourselves to drift away
intoxicated, in the world of shallow dreams
.

Now, that's a pretty deep and meaningful poem that I am not able to really examine...But it's text can apply to Gensokyo somewhat, yeah? If you're being philosophical, or maybe dramatic, about it.

And I am still 100% convinced this is supposed to be Keine, who is a freaking history teacher and also kinda dramatic (look at those spellcard names) so allow me to postulate a new theory.

"Oroha" is a typo of "Iroha", with O and I being directly next to eachother on the QWERTY layout. Because "Oroha" is seemingly nonsense.

Ah, feck. I was dreading getting my own Q.Nira.

The actual intended Kanji was 織羽, meaning “woven feather”… and reading “Oriha”. While I got the initial definition from ChatGPT among a list of other names, I actually went to check an ancestry website to check if it had been used as a last name. My mistake, I assume, was checking if the name “Oroha” was valid without a qualifier if it was used in japan.

With that said, the pronunciation/romaji is actually quite important, so neither “Iroha” or “Oriha” work. So for now, we’re switching up the kanji to 尾路羽, and keeping the romaji unchanged.

Update will hopefully come soon, but I expect a lot of this weekend to be spent with Expand Dong, so we’ll see.

The arc after this one will be about the Immaterial Children all finally regathering and regrouping in Gensokyo. Everyone who wasn't last seen in Gensokyo will arrive there at some point during that arc.

Marisa's arc is gonna take the whole of her 'tomorrow'. I can't say for certain how long that will be, but I would be very surprised if it was three threads.

The demon chuckled. It stepped back, waiting for the heroine’s next move.

Unfortunately, she didn’t have one. Her energy was spent, her few meagre tools used up. Now, her foe was pummelling her for sport, waiting to see how long it’d be before she dropped in defeat. She looked through her options. Running? There was no chance she could leave this fight safely. Defending? All that was doing was slowing the inevitable. Calling for help? They’d never make it in time. All she could do was fight… until the bitter end.

She focused for a moment… and threw out one, last, desperate attack. She hoped she’d strike something critical, maybe get a chance to turn things around… but sapped and exhausted as she was, her magic went wide. Her cruel opponent laughed, revelling in her despair as her final gambit failed to even scratch her foe. Then the foul creature lunged forward, grabbing for her throat… and then it was over.

“No, no, no-” Marisa felt her hand stiffen up, jerking the controller into an awkward position. She barely had time to brace herself before her arm folded, smacking her in the head with the plastic rectangle.

Marisa reeled, hissing in pain at her throbbing bruise. The moment she regained control of her arm, she launched the controller at the nearby wall, the console awkwardly clattering off it’s perch thanks to the attached cable. She collapsed back, groaning in pain, as a blurry shape approached her.”

“Toldja you couldn’t just muscle through.” Nio chuckled, placing a cool cloth over Marisa’s head. “Shoulda listened before you started bashing your own skull in, huh?”

“Just… shut up.” Every more eloquent comeback Marisa tried to make fell apart with the throbbing of her headache. “This game is rigged. My character can’t hit and can’t dodge.”

“Even in cursed games, mechanics exist for a reason, you know.” Even through the cloth, the changeling just knew there was a smirk on the komainu’s dumb, stupid face. “It’s a game about time management, preparing for the big fight. You’re not gonna get anywhere by hammering the same task over and over, especially if you don’t take any breaks. …At least you’re doing better than Mike.”

Marisa pulled herself up, taking a look at her friend. Mike had collapsed back, only the whites of her eyes visible as she twitched. “Is… she alright?” The changeling slowly waved her hand over the other kid’s face, nervously.

“She’ll be fine. Youkai are generally pretty tough.” Nio gently set a damp cloth over the cat’s face as well. “It’s just her game’s a little faster-paced than yours. Perhaps you both should take a break; my other body’s gonna be back with dinner soon.”

Marisa turned to look at the screen. Mike’s game was a first-person shooter, or a fantasy variant of the like; the one time she’d looked up at her friend’s screen, the player character had been shooting magic from their hand, but she hadn’t paid that much more attention to it. It appeared that the character’s corpse was being pecked at by a trio of birds, with a single phrase overlaid on the screen.

“‘You will never escape the sacred labyrinth. I will keep you here forever’,” the islander read out. The scowl on her face only grew. “No points for guessing where this was from.”

“Yeah, you both guessed right. I was kinda hoping I could bait one of you into playing Moriyer.” The older guy chuckled, brandishing a retro game with a frog and onbashira on its cover. “Would have been funny to watch you two get frogged.”

Marisa rolled her eyes, scooching over. “How hard is this one, anyways?”

“Easier than she made it look, that’s for sure.” The komainu chuckled. “Every time more than one enemy got close, she’d back up until she hit a wall and panic.”

The islander took a look at the FPS’s screen again. There was a wide space behind the birds, with the only wall visible immediately to the character’s right. “What, so she didn’t even circle strafe?”

“I don’t think she plays many shooters,” Nio said, shrugging. “Probably would have been better with a more strategic game.”

“What do you-” The implication caught Marisa off-guard, sputtering for a retort. “I- I didn’t- You could have said something, y’know!”

“You threw yourself at the first game you thought had something to do with this mystery shrine, asked me how to unlock the most powerful attacks, and then refused to listen to anything else I had to say over, what, four runs now?” The komainu met her glare with an even gaze of her own. “In fact, I believe I just said something about hammering the same task over and over?”

The changeling growled, to which Nio responded with a flick to her bruise. “You still got a brain under there, don’t you? How about you try switching it on before you mash it into uselessness?”

Marisa held her hand over her stinging forehead, as her tentacles twitched. She took a moment to bite her first few comments back, searching for something she could retort with… before hanging her head in defeat.

The young man nodded, easing into a more gentle tone. “I get that this is important to you, and you want to get information, but this one night already demonstrates that you both need to slow down and think what you’re doing through. After all, you’ve already got a fight of your own to deal with - if you ask me, your focus should be on that first.”

The islander couldn’t meet his gaze, instead finding her eyes drawn to her friend’s face. She reached out, petting the catgirl’s ears. “I suppose, and you’re right. Maybe it’s just something I’m trying to distract myself with, but… there’s more to it. This prisoner… I need to know what we’re dealing with. Urgently.”

“Yes?”

“...I don’t know what to think. About either of them. But…” She paused, taking a moment to make sure her friend was still unconscious. “She called out to Mike specifically. Or, maybe only Mike could hear her. I don’t know why, but she could. Like she’s meant to be this fated… holy servant.”

“Fated servant…” Nio hummed, leaning back to look at the ceiling. “It’s not like I’m unfamiliar with the concept. I was literally sculpted to serve Lady Chimata, after all. If this goddess is all you think she is, being her servant is a noble path.”

“Perhaps, but… when we were in the car, I had a thought.” Marisa kept scratching the calico’s ears, more out of sheer need for something to do than anything else. “Mike’s talked about her dreams before. Lots of times, all sorts of wild stuff about businesses and brands and setting others up for success. When I told her I wanted to go to space, she said she wanted to earn enough to send me there.” The islander chuckled. “She wants to make her mark on the world, and to hell with what ‘Lady Scarlet’ says, I know she’s capable of it. But… she can’t do any of that if she’s off helping some lost goddess restore their faith. Being a miko or something might not give her the time, or the money she needs to really start herself - and that’s assuming the goddess will let her do that, even. If this path had appeared any night before today, before the interview, before - before meeting me… I can’t help but wonder if Mike would have chosen it.”

The changeling sighed. “So… I wanna know. I want to know what her deal is. So if it’s not what Mike’s really looking for… I can talk her down from following her just so she can feel useful.”

“That’s more thought than I suspected,” the guardian said, sitting back. “...Though, if she’s really a good person and just a bad fit, I suspect that’s gonna be a hard fight to have with your friend.”

She chuckled. “Maybe, but if there’s one thing my aunt drilled into me a hundred times, it’s that caring about someone sometimes means telling them things they don’t want to hear.” There was a pause, before she looked up at Nio again. “...Thanks, by the way.”

Mike groaned, catching the duo’s attention. A weak hand reached up, pulling the cloth off of her face.

“...I smell… sushi?”

“You woke up just in time,” the komainu said, “I’m serving up dinner as we speak. Let’s eat, shall we?”

When Marisa had accepted living in the lodging of a goddess, she… hadn’t expected takeout.

It wasn’t like she was unused to it. She’d had plenty over the last couple of weeks, and this was good stuff, restaurant-grade sushi rather than vending machines, but still… she’d expected something just a touch more… noble. Goddess-y.

When questioned, Chimata did have a good answer, at least. “It’s important to support local businesses, you know. And have a good sense of them, as well. I wouldn’t have set up a market if the area around it wasn’t already known for high-quality goods and food.”

“I also used one of Mike’s cards,” Nio said, both halves eagerly serving out plates. “And it seems to have done well. They even had a licensed fugu chef there, so if you’ve ever wanted to try pufferfish, tonight’s the night.”

Marisa gave a half-hearted chuckle. “I guess I’ll have to take the chance, huh?” She did her best to mask her disappointment as she munched away, because it was good food. Great, even, she really had no complaints.

…She really did miss home cooking, though.

A coughing noise broke the lost girl out of her thoughts, as Mike choked on a piece of salmon. The market goddess sighed, patting her on the back until the catgirl managed to settle. “Slow down, Mike. Nio might well eat for two, but we’ve accounted for that already.”

“Mmmph. Can’t.” Mike took a moment to gulp down her water. “Gotta get back to the game.”

“Absolutely not.” Chimata face was stern, as the maneki-neko’s hardened. “You’ve already passed out once. If you keep getting cursed, you won’t be in any condition for tomorrow.”

The calico leapt to her feet, only to stagger from dizziness. “But we - ngh - we made a promise-”

“You made multiple promises. One of which was to me,” the goddess said flatly. She dropped a hand on the young girl’s shoulder, to steady her as much as reprimand her. “Don’t forget that the reason I’m letting you stay here is because you’ll be working in the Market tomorrow. I can’t have you two up late mushing your brains.”

Her hand gently pushed Mike back into her seat. “An important part of managing employees is making sure they don’t overwork themselves. Whatever’s happening with this vanishing path business, you will not solve a mystery the Scarlets have a part in by rushing headlong at the first possible hint you find. Take some time to plan things out, alright?”

The catgirl sagged, weakly. “...I just… I want to help. Any way I can.”

“We got time - like two weeks or so. We’ll figure it out with a whole week to spare,” Marisa offered, giving the cat a pat on the shoulders. “Besides, we… I shoulda given up on trying to brute force the boss a lot sooner. We’ll swap games next time.”

“If you end up needing it,” one Nio offered, as the other was still chewing. “‘Cos the Lunar Rainbow Market does have a lot of youkai attending it. Lady Chimata travels around a lot, so we’re not deep in on the local mysteries… but someone will be, I’m sure.”

“If we can trust them,” Mike said, doubtfully. “If the Scarlets are keeping that woman imprisoned, maybe all the places affiliated with them will lie about it too. And that’s… a lot of youkai.”

“Not that many, with how picky they are. And that doesn’t mean we can’t find something out,” Marisa said. “Auntie Zou always said the best lies are as close to the truth as possible, so there’s minimal chance evidence comes out and screws them up. Even if all we can get are fake stories about the shrine, they won’t be entirely fake.”

“...Mmmm.” Chimata gave Marisa a curious look, but seemed to put whatever question she had aside. “Well, there’s another urban legend to investigate, too. And from what I understand, the Moriya goddess was always rather on the independent and entrepreneurial side. Apparently did their best to slow down the Scarlet’s encroachment into the area. Who knows? Maybe someone who knows about one missing shrine will be able to tell you about another?”

“That’s a good point,” Nio said, nodding. “Just take some time and think things through. You’ve got lots of avenues to explore, and plenty of time to do it. So relax a little and actually enjoy the sushi, will you? Trust me, it’s good stuff.”

Mike looked over the group, before hanging her head in defeat. Slowly, she reached out over the table, plucking a piece of pufferfish… and slowly nibbling at it. “...Thanks for the food.”

“Thank you for the card that got us the good stuff,” Nio replied, giving the catgirl a rub on her back. “Make sure to enjoy it, alright? And don’t be afraid to take it easy on future nights, either. Cursed games are always a dice roll, anyways.”

“...How do cursed games work, anyways?” Marisa tilted her head. “Like, how much do these actually relate to the real story?”

“That’s… really difficult to say,” Chimata admitted, shrugging. “Cursed games generally aren’t made with a formalised process. It’s more common to leave them in some area where spiritual power abounds, and then just let them absorb it and transform as needed. It means that they tend to be… like a stream of consciousness. Sometimes they’re all but the exact truth, and sometimes they’re almost completely abstracted.”

“Not to mention, most cursed cartridges are essentially recycled real games - ones that got damaged beyond conventional repair, or ones that were never working in the first place. The code gives it structure, makes sure the games will be, y’know, actually games… but you can’t put a square peg through a round hole without breaking something.”

Marisa fished through her pocket, pulling out the damaged virtual pet. “...Do you think I could get this repaired, that same way? Or maybe even fix it myself?”

“Like a cursed game? I mean, in theory even Lady Chimata could imbue it, but the merging of magic and code always has unpredictable effects.” Nio looked at the now illegible screen, looking uncertain. “You might wanna see if you can get someone to repair it, instead.”

Marisa stared at the vpet, idly tapping through the buttons. The game’s chirps were a bit more shrill than usual, almost sounding pained. …but that was probably just because the speaker was damaged. Just about everything else was, after all.

“...Though, speaking about what you can do… how’d those cards go?” Chimata gave a warm smile. “Do you still have a few of those seeds of yours?”

“Huh? Oh, the cards? We used a few, yeah.” A quick fish through her pockets revealed four of them remaining. “...We could do with a top-up, though.”

“If I can make a few more copies of Mike’s card at the same time, I’m happy to trade,” Chimata said with a smile. “Though… that is a question. Do you want more Seed cards, or for me to try to tease out something else?”

[ ] More Seed of Unknown Form Cards would be good. They’d served her well throughout the day, and she hadn’t figured out the trick to making them, yet.
[ ] Maybe something to help with mobility, instead? She had something like wings, it’d be nice to be able to fly in some way or other. Especially as flight seemed like something most youkai could do.
[ ] Or see if there’s a big, powerful attack? The spell she had required a focus or something to work. Of course, there was the risk that the new card would have the same limitation...

Here’s my thoughts:

Seeds of Unknown Form are good for causing distractions, but I have a feeling Marisa will need to face her problems head-on. Relying on this option may cause problems.

A mobility tool may help Marisa in a few ways. Firstly, flight allows Marisa to approach situations at a new angle. Secondly, stealth, escape, combat, and chasing someone are much easier with flight. Thirdly, depending on how the flight manifests, Marisa could connect more with either her Nue-self, or her Past-self. (UFOs or brooms?)

An attack option is useful for obvious reasons.

It'll be interesting to see how Marisa flies whether she uses her wings, a broom, or a trident
Though picking a powerful attack isn’t a bad choice either.

Well, we already figured out the Seed of Unknown Form, so while topping that up would be nice, it'd probably be better to know something new. Big Laser would be good, *but* that runs the risk of hurting the STA, the Goddess, or even both on our next encounter. So, by process of elimination, magician movement it is.

Because "Ooga Booga" is, like Eustace from Courage the Cowardly Dog.

Unga Bunga is "BIG HAMMER SMASH", basically the physical version of what Marisa does.

And, ah, no. Marisa does not Unga Bunga. She has the spirit, but not the muscles.

Seriously, Marisa is tiny! She might actually be taller right this moment than she was when the Pyres attacked the last timeline.

That hasn’t been confirmed at all, though. If you’re talking about the claim they’re actually a Lunarian AI, I’m still yet to see the dialogue that supposedly evidences that. And I have been looking.

It seems like an early mistranslation (or a complaint about character designs) that got snowballed into the actual story reveals.

...Uhhh, from what I read, one character could be considered an AI.

Except it's not the Houjuu, it's the EX Boss, who was born from the Pyramid's data.

The Houjuu seems to be around solely to kick her friend out of the Sanctuary for a bit.

The only argument for the Houjuus not being family is that they're different species. Which would be a decent argument, if both weren't "unidentifiable" and based on very vague concepts of very non-specific creatures. She's a Chimi, which refer to *all* monsters of mountains and rivers. By that, a Kappa and a Tengu could be a Chimi.

Sounds kinda like a Nue, which has referred to many different creatures of different legends.

Even older, the term "Chimi" is basically equivalent to how Youkai is used in Touhou.

And what are their names? Oh, just the names of their "species". Same naming scheme, same last name, similar titles, similar origins... I'd be really surprised if they aren't related!

One very important detail, though!

If they are related, Nue is almost certainly the younger, as the term for Chimi is over two thousand years old while Nue's oldest legend is less than 1300. So Chimi's baby sister/cousin had a daughter! She can fawn over them and be the cool auntie!

[1] More Seed of Unknown Form Cards would be good. They’d served her well throughout the day, and she hadn’t figured out the trick to making them, yet.
[11] Maybe something to help with mobility, instead? She had something like wings, it’d be nice to be able to fly in some way or other. Especially as flight seemed like something most youkai could do.
[5] Or see if there’s a big, powerful attack? The spell she had required a focus or something to work. Of course, there was the risk that the new card would have the same limitation...

The attack would be nice. If Marisa was really lucky, it might even be the same attack that the Stardust Witch had been trying to teach her. She doubted it’d just work like that, but maybe there’d be some trick she’d be able to exploit?

But that was all kind of a roll of the dice. When they’d gotten back, Marisa and Mike had been open about their desire to help, but not about their plan to physically join Kotohime’s efforts. All they’d said was that they were helping investigate… and Chimata and Kotohime had kept talking after that.

Which meant that they were definitely under at least some suspicion. And if you weren’t factoring that raid in, what did they really have to deal with? The missing shrine, which might well be nothing for all Marisa knew, and avoiding those thugs when they’d already pulled a fast one on them. Asking for a lot of high-power attacks would make it sound like she was looking for trouble.

But mobility… that was a different story.

“I’d actually like to see if there’s some way I can fly, or something like that?” She twitched her tentacles. “I do have these things, after all. And getting around more smoothly would be good.”

Chimata gave a stern look. “I’m willing to oblige, but I’ll set a rule: if I do manage to pull some form of flight out, you can’t use it until the morning. Either of you.”

The changeling wanted to haggle with the goddess - but her throbbing headache made the case on it’s own. “...Fine. But can we at least see what sort of card it is?”

“If you’re sure it won’t affect your sleep.” The market goddess waved her hand. Nio’s other body walked up, spreading out a set of cards in front of his mistress. “Thank you, dear. Shall we, Marisa?”

The changeling nodded, taking a proffered hand like she had earlier that day. Chimata closed her eyes, as Marisa tried to think about flying through the sky. It was… pretty hard to imagine, honestly; flying on her own power like all the rest here was hard to visualise, even with her wing things. Not to say she’d never imagined taking off from the earth, but it’d always been on or in some sort of vehicle-

“Oh my.” Marisa opened her eyes. Apparently, this time it didn’t require a static shock; the goddess was once again holding a fragment of Marisa’s power in her fist. This one was a yellow light, pulsing at regular intervals. “You’re full of surprises, aren’t you? This appears to be some sort of flight, but it’s not standard faire. Let’s see…”

There was a scraping sound from Mike’s side of the table. Marisa turned to see the maneki-neko getting up, a small pile of sushi gathered on her plate.

“I’m just gonna go eat- elsewhere. In my room, or out in the plaza. Iunno.” The maneki-neko’s voice was tired, carrying an edge of frustration.

The changeling got up to follow her. “Mike-”

“This doesn’t have anything to do with me,” the catgirl riposted, “so if it’s quite alright with you, I’d just… rather not think about how there’s a half-dozen cards sitting on the table that’ll help you fly or shoot laser beams or do some other thing I can’t do-”

“Nothing to do with you? That’s hardly true.” The two girls paused, turning around. Chimata was imbuing the cards before her casually, barely looking up. “After all, you’re the sort of person I invented ability cards for in the first place.”

She hummed, picking up the set of cards and examining them. “Ability cards are designed to grant the power of one to another. To give the weak strength, the foolish insight, the grounded flight. After all, there are all too many cases where wishes lay beyond the power of the one who makes them.”

Mike scoffed. “Yeah, that’s exactly what I need. A bunch of power borrowed from everything that’s stronger and cooler than a maneki-neko.”

That brought the marketeer’s eyes away from the cards. “Borrowed? No, not borrowed. Bartered.

They both felt it. A change in the air. The woman before them was wearing little more than a tracksuit, a far cry from the resplendent kimono during the market’s opening hours. A set of simple, humble clothes that might get a glance for the rainbow stripe and nothing more. And yet, as Marisa stared back at the goddess’ eyes, something unfathomable seemed to radiate from within.

The shift had happened without even lifting a finger, or moving a muscle. It was just suddenly undeniable that the being speaking to them was not mundane or mortal in the slightest. Her aura in the market had been resplendent, magnificent, but tempered and controlled - here, it was almost blinding.

“And that,” the Goddess continued, a flicker of amusement in Her voice, “makes all the difference in the world.”

She reached into Her pocket; pulling out a single card trailing golden light. On it, Marisa could see a crow, unfurling its wings. “A tengu’s power of flight.” A card with a green wallet on it left the pocket, without ever being touched, and followed the first’s path. “A kappa’s extending arm.” More followed, one after another, and Tenkyuu Chimata named each one in turn.

“A kamaitaichis’ dancing blade. A rabbit’s luck. A dragon’s fire, or a yuki-onna’s ice. A hermit’s defensive mantra, and a shinigami’s ability to pierce the same.” The cards flowed, riding the golden trail in a gentle orbit around Her, as the room seemed to fall away. “There is many an ability I can take from one, and bestow upon another. And yet, for each and every one, there is a simple rule; A Price must be Paid.

Mike stuttered, tripping over whatever apology she tried to give. The Goddess barely seemed to register it, her eyes turning back to the table.

“From the very beginning of time, all beings were made as parts of a whole. Individually imperfect - but capable of more together than alone. With the right knowledge and experience, most mortals and youkai can just about sustain their own lives; but together, they can do far more than merely perpetuate themselves. They can thrive, expand beyond, shape the very world - but still, it was incomplete.”

She raised her hand, and Marisa’s cards were swept up in the golden light. “After all, there were often mismatches. Just because they were parts of a whole didn’t mean that they always fit together perfectly. A farmer’s produce flourishes and wanes with the seasons, while a tailor’s clothes come out as fast as they can be sewn. It was the invention of currency - of a single item that could tie all goods together - that finally brought about civilization as we know it today.”

The Goddess smiled. “You find yourself frustrated, Mike, because you think that power is something you lack. That a maneki-neko, one who can beckon wealth, is lesser than a wise hakutaku or a vicious oni. But wealth is potential; it can be turned to strength, to knowledge, to whatever means you wish to accomplish. You just have to know what you need, and how to get it.”

The catgirl stared at Her, overwhelmed, as She stood up. “Don’t overlook your own power chasing the shadow of another’s, kitten. Make your strength into whatever you need it to be - whether that’s a weapon to stand alongside your friend, or merely a means to support her.”

The Goddess laid Her hand on the maneki-neko’s shoulder, as the aura around her eased. Chimata smiled, giving the girl a small ruffle of her ears. “There’s no shame in buying the power of another to use for your own ends. The very process of doing so proves yourself worthy of it.”

“Wh-what Chimata said,” Marisa said, still regathering herself from the pressure of the goddess unleashed. “You can make it work, Mike. You’re really inventive, after all - you might be able to use some powers better than their owners can!”

“Now that’s an interesting thought.” The marketeer’s eyes sparkled. “Mike, if you want to go somewhere private, and eat in peace, by all means do so. But if you’d like… we can talk a bit about some of the cards I have, and some of the stores you might be interested in for this market. How does that sound?”

Mike looked down, blushing a bit. It took her a moment to regather her courage, her voice coming out as a shy confession.

“I… I think I’d like that.”

A couple hours had passed. Marisa had gotten her first warm shower in a fortnight, and was finally in fresh pajamas as well. She lay in one of the two beds Nio had gotten out for them, examining the card in her hand.

A flying saucer, drawn in radiant yellow. Bulbous and rounded, not as sleek and metallic as she might have expected, but still utterly undeniable. One of the most classic spacecraft imaginable… and a fragment of her own power, apparently. She paused, taking a moment to ‘read’ the card again.

Ordinary UFO

Houjuu Marisa’s ability to conjure a UFO. A craft designed for a single rider, this drone possesses no innate combat potential.

What did that mean? She hadn’t wanted to interrupt Mike’s browsing, but she’d spent most of her time looking over the card, trying to think of how it made sense.

Was it that she was an alien youkai? Like, a youkai that was formed based on an alien? Did that count? …She supposed it must happen sometimes, though the thought felt like an oxymoron, and she’d never heard of an alien like her. The idea that she was the one type of alien she didn’t already know about just seemed absurd.

Or was it… was it because it was an Unidentified Flying Object? The word ‘spaceship’ wasn’t in the card’s description at all. Maybe she could conjure it ‘cause it was unidentifiable - and that crossed over with her own interest in aliens and the stars. That made some sense, right?

“Do you think it has a tractor beam?” Marisa blinked, turning to look at Mike. The catgirl had gathered some sort of catalogue of ability cards, making dozens of little notes in the margins about each one. “‘Cos that’s like a classic spaceship thing.”

“Wish I knew.” Marisa sighed, dropping the card on the bedside table between them. “Don’t even know how I’m gonna fit in it.”

“I wonder how fast it can go.” Mike leant back, thinking. “It might be just what we need to help the goddess escape.”

Marisa nodded. “Yeah. As long as it’s not too hard to fly… although according to Chimata, most people would be able to fly already.”

She folded her arms back. “Still, that was… that was incredible. Is that what her power is really like? I’d never expected a goddess of something as simple as markets to be so overwhelming.”

“Maybe it’s because she’s a goddess of markets,” Mike mused. “Even as people lose faith elsewhere, there’s markets all around the world. Perhaps she’ll never weaken.”

“Maybe.” Marisa yawned, sleepiness starting to overtake her. “Wonder if she’s got any markets in Gensokyo. Hope we’ll see her there eventually.”

Silence fell between them once more. After a few moments, the changeling saw glowing eyes turn to her in the darkness. “Marisa… I’m sorry. I’ve been causing trouble all evening.”

“Hey, hey, it’s all right. Frankly, it’s been nice thinking about anything other than my own problems for once.” She managed a small grin. “Just don’t give up on yourself, alright? You’ll make it work. I know you will.”

“...Yeah.” Mike’s eyes turned determined. “I’ll do it. I’ll find a way to save her… no matter what it takes.”

Marisa sighed. “Let’s just get some sleep. After tonight, I really don’t wanna make Chimata angry.”

“Mmmmm.” Slowly, the catgirl’s eyes flickered shut. “Night, Marisa.”

“Night, Mike.” The changeling sighed, pulling her sheets up. “Talk to ya in the morning.”

Fortunately, it didn’t take Marisa long. With Mike at ease and the first warm, soft bed she’d had in weeks, it wasn’t long before the islander drifted off, falling into a deep sleep.

Well, at least Mike's confidence is back to a better point now, even if it involved *slightly* pissing Chimata off. On another note, it feels rather surprising to have a dream sequence with multiple familiar faces, so I'm looking forward to it. Of course I'm voting for Kosuzu, and since I'm not sure who the other two are, I'm hoping to see them in action.

I think that Mike needs more help than Marisa right now and of the choices I think Reimu, Mima, and Rinnosuke are the dreams that would help Marisa help Mike the most.

Seeing Reimu's natural talent vs. past Marisa's hard work might help Marisa figure out how to help Mike overcome her inferiority complex.

Rinnosuke while goes off on tangents during his talks, does sometimes have some okay advice from time to time.

Seeing how Mima trained past Marisa when she was a human might give Marisa an idea of some training that could help Mike. Also, if the ghost in the shrine is indeed Mima it might reveal her identity at least to us or tell us that we need to spend more time figuring out who the ghost is.

Those are extremely cute. Baby birbs are absolutely adorable.

Sorry for everyone who’s been waiting on a proper update. It’s actually about halfway done, but it’s been halfway done for at least a week.

In truth, I’ve been struggling with writing the story recently, and getting distracted with lots of other ideas. I think I’m a bit burnt out, and I always find it hardest to write a story while I want to keep something under wraps. Setup is harder than payoff, but it’s the foundation on which payoff is built so it doesn’t just need to be done but is even more important for it.

The dream (which got the winner I was hoping for) is something I’ve wanted to show for a while, but when it came to writing it, it proved a lot harder than I thought. So while it’s now written, I honestly still want to go back and tinker with it more; it doesn’t quite feel like the Memory Marisa is thinking at quite the right age level yet.

And then, of course, a certain new game arrived. One that has absolutely swallowed me whole with no hesitation. I’ve ended up taking a break to just enjoy making my way through that. I am now very late into Silksong; according to the completion percentage I am 93% complete.

I’ll say nothing else on the matter, because naturally at that point literally EVERYTHING could be spoilers. I’ll just say that the game is damn good and damn hard. I’d highly recommend it to anyone, but I’d also recommend that anyone interested make sure to play Hollow Knight 1 first, both because it’s slightly cheaper and a good bellweather for whether you’d like the sequel, and also because it’s a hefty step up in difficulty from the first game.

Though, while we wait, how about another QnA? Much like the one beginning in >>210200. please preface your questions with [?] once more, and I’ll do my best to answer them.

First round of questions, up to >>214590

[?] in terms of arcs, how much longer are you planning to continue R/R?
I tend to see the story as three or four broad sagas:
1: Re/Awakening, the first six arcs ending with the original five getting back to Gensokyo.
2: Re/Union or Re/Collection, the next five/six arcs starting with Paradox/Prologue.
3: Re/Growth, an unset number of arcs covering the larger timespan between the kids all getting together and the deadline. This is the one I'm most uncertain about, because it feels necessary to not just skip to the very end but I'm not 100% certain how I'd like to divvy things up just yet. It's hard to say, because I actually have pretty clear goals set for Re/Awakening and Re/Union, but Re/Growth will largely focus on the various knock-on effects.
4: A final set of arcs where everything gets actually finished off and wrapped up.

[?] What media most inspired you with writing? (in general and with R/R)
My favourite series of all time will always be the Discworld series, so that's my general inspiration.

With that said, what inspired R/R specifically... maybe a few things? One is simply the wide bevy of 'reincarnated as X' manga, like Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken and Kumo Desu Ga. That sort of got me thinking about the concept of becoming other species.

I've also long liked speculatives about how you can change one little thing about a character - even just as simple as making a girl a boy, or vice versa - and that can sometimes have massive ripple effects in everything about them and how people react to them. Imagine how much chaos could ensue in Gensokyo if even just a couple of the protag group were boys - suddenly, thnks like romance for straight characters goes from 'entirely irrelevant to anything incident-related' to 'potential vicious war over the few named character-tier guys'. It's the ripples from those changes that I think are most interesting - a big theme of R/R in general is how things change (and stay the same) if people within are changed.

And in a weird way, Lost Word inspired me without me having played it - though with a spiteful note. For all the focus on AUs, they never actually make anything interesting like a world where someone ended up a vampire or a world where anyone's a different species. And nobody ends up in anything really wild, y'know?

[?] Whats your favourite Touhou character | official media | fanmade media?
Joutouguu Mayumi, Forbidden Scrollery, and this youtube video: https://youtu.be/aReJUM5PpCs

[?] What was your favorite vote so far?
Hmmm... probably still the Akyuu vote about how to address Reisen. Definitely a really heartfelt and inspiring one.

[?] Not sure if this is spoilery or not, but what can the UFOs do?
It is a bit spoilery, and you should find out soon enough, story time. One thing I will say at this point is that the thing can't produce any danmaku, or act as a 'slave' for such - but this is only known of the ability card version. She might be able to wring more potential out of it in the fullness of time.

[!] May i offer you a Nue in these trying times?
It's a very cute nue, thank you. I always feel bad when my first thought seeing someone else's shown art is 'damn, wish I could make that a chapter image instead', but I can always just crop it a touch.

[?] You've said before you liked to do this again once you finish the series, right? Would you do it with the same characters but different choices? Different characters? Or a brand new incident altogether?

...Did I say that? Well, regardless, a lot of that is what X/X is for. At this point, I'd rather pursue other ideas if I'm dedicating full story chops to it.

[?] Will Mayumi have more interactions with Yachie as a mother and daughter?
Not likely. The relationship between Yachie and Keiki isn't really even close to familial - for a painfully felt lack of a better term, it's more like Keiki's a sperm donor. They're staying around because it's better for their mutual kid, but there's nothing approaching a familial relationship between the factions, and likely won't be anytime soon.

[?] Will Reisen2 appear in the story or will she keep the same name?
She already has! Akyuu choked her out back on the moon.

Other than that, we'll see. CiLR is a prime example of what could happen in Re/Growth, though.

[?] What is your favorite spellcard in the story?
Probably Kosuzu's night parade card, at least right now. That one was just fun to come up with things for.

[?] If you were to write this story over from the beginning again, what would you do differently?
I'd consider putting one or more characters having a 'shared' backstory, like being sisters. Less arcs overall that way. I'd also probably put way more thought into which options I like, and probably do less three-fers.

Either that, or introduce a 'Jesus take the wheel' vote where if a hefty majority of epople vote for it (i.e. after a twenty-vote penalty) then I can decide whatever I like for the species choice.

[?] On a related point, is there a specific plot point or arc you think didn't land as well as it should have... or conversely, one that went particularly well?
The Moriya Shrine timeline is absolutely my Task Failed Successfully moment. I genuinely didn't expect people to just go 'yeah that makes sense' and roll with it, but it helped make Suwako's twist go smoother, so that actually worked out for me.

Something else I wanted to communicate with that is that the Immaterial Children have an innate sense of what the original, unaltered timeline should be, which is sort of a compensatory factor. It's stronger for each kid the less memories they have - or maybe it's that the more memories they have, the more easily they can override that feeling of wrongness.

And lastly, I am shocked that a certain character has received basically no questions about her nature whatsoever.

[?] Given that we've got Orin, Chen, and now Mike all in the story, we need a cat PR. Which feline Touhou is best?
Toramaru Shou.

[?] Has writing R/R noticeably changed your opinion about a character?
Before K/K, Tsukasa was a character I mainly wanted to write straight sympathetically - someone who'd bring anyone she wanted to help to ruin, whether she meant to or not. Needless to say, the Tsukasa we got was very different.

[?] Are there any characters that you really wish you could have used that you just haven't been able to fit in?
Toramaru Shou.

[?] Any plans for the TH20 newhu's?
Currently, I've got plans for Nina and Ariya in Paradox/Prologue. Nothing that world-changing, mind - Ariya's just serving a role that would have been covered otherwise by a different preservation method, and Nina would just be comic relief.

[?] What would be your biggest tip for any would-be writers?
The biggest tip I gave in the last QnA, so I'll do some others this time:
- Break your first works into small, bite-sized chunks. Small pieces that are internally complete, even if they're part of a greater whole. Better to have something small that's at least a satisfying story than something grand you'll never finish.
- Crosspost! In my eyes, the best way to help the site grow is to post the story in two places and accept votes in just one. It doesn't even matter where to - I actively encourage you to pick something I didn't.

[?] Is there a favorite reader comment or favorite piece of fan art you've received?
I still have a soft spot for the very first image Kosuka made of Reimu and her plushie Genjii. Even as other artists and Kosu themselves have produced much more technically strong works, it's still the work that made me realise Redo/Reimu would be something special.

As for reader comments, the original Tidepisser is still legendary.

[?] Have there been developments in the story that have surprised you? Moments where characters acted out in ways you weren't expecting (or perhaps weren't prepared for) them to behave?
I've mentioned it before, but Kosuzu's original meeting with Reimu was a lot more playful, when she was a full toob fox. Of course, the Kosuzu we met was a lot less... fun in that regard, so it wasn't to be.

Really, true-toob-fox Kosuzu is complete flip. I think her mother would sincerely want nothing more than for her to live up to her grandmother's legacy and become a kitsune again, even if this meant not being able to acknowledge her as a daughter - but I think Kosuzu herself ends up very much a menace regardless. Megumu is not a good mother figure if you want any discipline whatsoever. Her past self would have to rein her in, not encourage her bad behaviour.

(Kosuka decided to draw that version of Kosuzu recently, so I used her as the post image. I love this dubious little creature.)

[?] Is Ser Inchling going to get his chance soon? Or, for that matter, do you have plans to write any more what-if content?
[?] Out of curiosity... did you figure out who all this was coming from before that last question?

I didn't, but that's because my eyes locked on to the spoiler you casually dropped in your post, LS.

All I'll say on Ser Inchling for now is that I intend to do... not an arc, but a silly little short involving the Shining Needle Castle in R/R. If you see something alone the lines of 'Shining Needle Defence Force" as an option, know that it's been a long time coming, and one of my favourite ideas for the whole story on a shenanigans level.

[?] Out of all of the write-ins, which one would you say is your favorite?
Still the Akyuu blend one, i think.

[?] What were the general story arcs for each alternative choice (Tengu Reimu, Vampire Akyuu, etc.)?
Varying degrees of story applied to each one. Some I genuinely don't know how I could have constructed a whole arc for them (Tengu Reimu is definitely one of these - high power, decent memories, literally the youkai mountain).

Most of them were really just scattered scenes I'd figure out how to string together. That's partially what X/X is for.

...This actually lead to a straight-up private meltdown during the Marisa vote, because I had so little for Mouserisa that it ended up stressing me out for days that it might get picked. Which, while I'm at it, let me make one more addition to the writing advice I gave in the first one.
Don't put a choice in for 'themes' or for 'nice symbolism' if you don't actually have something to put behind it. Don't give the audience choices that you're not honestly ready to write.

[?] Is there any particular myth you'd want to see in newer touhou games that's not already in?
I'm less deep into japanese mythology, and more curious about interconnections and so on with the existing cast. So right now, my biggest curiosity is Konohana Sakuyahime, Ariya's presumable sister.

[?] If you could choose a third player character for a future touhou game (assuming Reimu and Marisa as the first two and it being a character that had no previous playable iterations like Youmu or Sakuya), who would you choose?
Either Mayumi, or Kosuzu.

[?] If you had to make the story for a new touhou game/spinoff, what would it be?
So, I've had a few ideas for games, but most of them would fall pretty firmly into Fan Game territory. A metroidvania involving Reimu gaining the powers of various beast youkai, an Ace Attorney-style game featuring Daiyousei, so on and so forth.

I think the one that'd fit in at least the fighting game spinoffs was essentially something very similar to urban legends, but what characters got were based on time periods and historical events - for example, Cirno would have the power of the Ice Age, and Marisa the Salem Wtich Trials. Mainly because it was a golden way to sneak in Mima, Yumemi, or both.

[?] What was the original plan for Kosuzu's arc?
Foxsuzu would probably have ended up being broadly similar in terms of the geopolitics, with the fox herself being more about trying to moderate her own behaviour to not screw Reimu over. The idea of Shirohime wasn't a concept at this point, but there was an idea Kosuzu could end up becoming an inari to steer herself away from tubefoxdom.

[?] Would anything special have happened if Kosuzu hit 0 Grip before That Scene?
I think she would have tried to tell Reimu a bit about what had happened to her. To say this would've ended poorly for Tsukasa would be an understatement.

[?] Did the Scarlet Talent Agency have any particular inspirations? It seems like a pretty fleshed-out idea.
I'd been toying with the idea of a greater House of Scarlet since at least the Vampire Akyuu days. The STA specifically came about intended to be part of Tigersuzu's arc: she'd sneak out on her own to get to Gensokyo, and that was one of the options. And the Koartette came out just because I needed someone who ould deal with tresspassers.

[?] Any votes you can recall that left you facepalming at the voter's logic? I promise we won't get mad.
If you ever hear a character say or think something along the lines of "why the hell did I think that was a good idea?" after a vote, there's a good chance they're acting as an author mouthpiece to at least some degree. Probably the most recent was trying to comfort Mike post you-are-nothing-special funk by talking about Marisa's own recent breakthrough.

[?] Are there any epilogues/shorts/xenologues you look back on fondly?
Most of them I do!

[?] If you were given the opportunity to give one of your characters a headpat, who are you picking?
I think Kosuzu needs the headpats most of all.

[?] Which area is worse between the two HK games, Deepnest or Bilewater?

Let me put it this way. I never want to stay in Deepnest. It's dark, it's oppressive, and nothing has any thoughts or soul, it all just hungers and comes out at you every which way. I want to get in, grab what I need, and GTFO. Silksong doesn't have any true equivalent of that - the zones that match aesthetically don't have the same oppressive feel to them, and the zone you listed actually has quite beautiful, if tragic, music. I'm actually listening to it as I type this.

[?]A while ago you mentioned how if the voters failed to vote for reimu to save youki there would be heavy consequences like her getting PTSD or youki actually dying, how would that have affected y/y? Also if akyuu failed to save Haru, and Youmu to Koishi, what would have been the consequences there?

For the most part, it'd largely be heavy guilt on the failed party, even with relatively little pressure from the most affected who remain. Haru's death had happened once already; expecting Akyuu to pop out of a crash landing and change that was unreasonable, but that wouldn't let Akyuu excuse herself.

[?] Follow up question to all the arcs, since you mentioned CiLR does that mean you'll be writing about all the game incidents and written works like from SSiB to FDS?
This is meant to be an alternate timeline. Things might end up jumbled and out of order, deliberately or otherwise, but a lot of things that originally caused incidents will end up covered in one way or another I'm sure.

[?] How would an Iizunamaru Reimu's relationship be with the other known/named tengus? Are they just subordinates, mentors, almost family?
[?] I'm also curious about this question, since we never got a tengu/youkai mountain route, what was the general plot going to be there for Reimu or Youmu? And who would have been their dads?
I'll put these two questions together.

For Youmu, she'd basically just be smaller momiji when it comes to inter-tengu relationships. Aya messes with her, Hatate's a bit more neutral, and Megumu thinks Crows are better. Her father would've most likely been just an unnamed wolf who passed away.

Reimu woulda been... interesting. I was playing with the idea of her father actually being Tenma himself, though this would be mere speculation among the general tengu society. Still, even without that she's a daitengu, one with an aggressive demeanour who doesn't like people causing problems. And Megumu is NOT the mother figure you want to rein in a child's more dangerous impulses. Remembering her past would mellow her out and turn her ire outwards, but until that point she'd be an absolute menace to tengu society, though still an ultimately kind-hearted one.

[?] Which of the boss fights (any encounter using the strike system) would you say your favorite is?
I'm really mostly glad they've all worked well. Each one has sort of been it's own beast, making it hard to compare.

I guess of my options, it'd probably be Youmu and Okuus. A big grander plot moment in so many ways, y'know?

[?] Are there any story bits that were planned to be mostly irrelevant but became notable after voters latched on to them?
You will be very surprised where those two plushies Reimu 'lost' ended up.

[?] You occasionally like to play with the voting system, like 'broken votes' mid update or Yukari blocking the vote. Is that particularly worth investigating or should I put away the corkboard I've built up over it?
The votes are the reader's/hollow psyche's will, manifesting when the character is making an important choice. Votes 'break' when circumstances change such that the original decision point is no longer relevant. Yukari, likewise, stepped in specifically to block off Kosuzu's thoughts from external influence.

Do keep an eye on it. We're only gonna get more screwy from here.

[?] Any works you want to shoutout like the old end-of-thread shoutouts?
Perhaps I should try and resurrect that. There's a lot of good stories across the site, after all. I started naming specific ones in my original response to this and ended up with at least six after a moment's thought.

[?] Are there any good, non-spoiler antagonists that we'd have seen on the routes not taken? I find heroes and mother figures tend to be in shorter supply than a good villain.
Biggest one is that Rikako would have made her debut at the end of Youmu's stealth exit. The sneak-out option for Reimu also would have made Kurokoma the focused threat for the arc, with Yuuma being saved for a followup arc - rather than the other way around.

In said followup arc, it also could have been Seiga who captured Yumemi and joined forces with Tsukasa. The one Reimu and Yukari didn't attack would be the one the kidnappers retreated to. This would've likely been more like a 2v2, in the library Kosuzu loved so much.

[?] Any clue on what happened to Renko in this story?
Yes.

[?] What would the plans for Youmu's arc have been if we had voted for Reimu to tale Hakurouken back in her arc?
Looking back? I honestly don't know. Youmu was expected to be the last arc, so Reimu could have headed to the surface to hand it over as part of their reunion.

[?] Is there a certain inspiration for the Pyres and the mysterious black fire?
I think looking back, FFXIV Endwalker and the Blasphemies seem like big inspirations in hindsight. Despair spreading like a plague that silences all life... the mechanics and designs are different, but it's hard to deny a through-line.

[?] Can you give info on what Marisa would have been like as Sekibanki’s kid?
A key factor would be exploring one particular concept; when it comes to getting magic and becoming a magician, Marisa is her own worst enemy. She's too self-confident, too stubborn - it got her into the field of magic, but she refuses to take the magic that technically suits her, rather than the magic she thinks is flashiest.

Bankisa would be outwardly a lot less confident, and generally shy, cautious and reserved - but because of that, she doesn't take the path of most resistance to every step of progression. So she's actually much stronger compared to the equivalent human Marisa, despite having far less training and power. And that self-confidence can return, if the situation calls for it - Bankisa's arc would've significantly revolved around that balance (and this weird rabbit who insists they were friends in their past life).

I often say that what makes to the Watatsukis so powerful is they have reimu level talent with Marisa level drive. Bankisa doesn't actually lose that drive - it just gets channeled into far more productive means to their ends.

Silksong is actually 100% done as of tonight. Here's hoping I can get to proper writing tomorrow.

[?] Why was the vote to this arc advertised to give Marisa “power in spades” (which you promised to respect the vote for) yet this entire arc has been the opposite of that? These feel a little unfair, but I'll give them a decent shake.

[?] Why was the vote to this arc advertised to give Marisa “power in spades” (which you promised to respect the vote for) yet this entire arc has been the opposite of that? Especially if as you're saying that the sekibanki one would have her stronger than before, but you advertised none of that for that route?
Specifically, it was 'power without knowledge'. Marisa is both physically and magically strong as a youkai, but she hasn't got the knowledge to tease out those various abilities. And when players have had an option to have Marisa explore that, they've usually chosen otherwise, like in >>213659, where they're choosing between Kasen's standard training, and Zanmu's method:
>Zanmu gave a scoff. “Sure, that’s one way to go about it. But I wanted to offer a different style.” She leant in, with a conspiratorial grin. “Marisa… you haven’t had the chance to really cut loose, have you?”
>The changeling blinked. “Cut… loose?”
>The oni gave a small chuckle. “You’re afraid of your own strength, right? You don’t really know how strong you are, only that you’ve got to hold yourself back. But while we’re here… you can go as crazy as you can.” She gestured grandly to the space around them. “I mean, this whole space isn’t ‘real’. It doesn’t matter if you knock down a building, even. And you’re certainly not gonna hurt me.”
>Marisa hesitated, as Zanmu leant in. “Trust me, kid. You’re a powerful youkai now, and there’s nobody that can really get hurt here. Why not go a little bit berserk, and have some fun with it?”
>“Ah-hem.” Kasen grabbed at one of the oni’s horns, pulling her back. “I think a more subtle combat style would be a better fit, here. After all, if they try and do some massive attack, they’ll be exposed.”
>“But if they get exposed, isn’t it better to know exactly how hard they can punch?"

This was where Marisa's raw power would have been displayed.

See also, the big powerful attack ability card that's been offered twice now and turned down each time. When Marisa is worked up, she can break brick with just her grip, carry her friend around with one hand, and punch holes in the wall. The power is there, but the player choices have generally been to round Marisa out rather than lean in on her strengths.

Marisa's actually in a position surprisingly comparable to canon Reimu right now. She has a lot of raw potential waiting to be unleashed.

As for Bankisa, stronger might have been too narrow of a word. She's more effective, but that's more because she's more versatile - she leans into her strengths and learns a broader range of useful magic, thus making her a better spellcaster and even sometimes a better fighter than a human Marisa of the same age, despite not having extra memories. The X/X "Nightless Red vs. Countless Heads" idea had this as one of it's bigger themes, of bankisa punching above her weight without needing to just get a bigger fist.

[?] Speaking of the first vote, why after every previous arc having the spirit choices labelled was this one unmarked? Especially with one of the options completely negating what this arc was advertised to have?
The spirit stat was determined by the species choice this time. I have no idea what you mean by 'one of the options completely negating what this arc was advertised to have' .

Instead, the adjustable stat was the instinct choice, which was signposted. A little twist on the usual, and fitting for someone who only just awakened to her powers.

[?] Why is the entire powerset we are getting for Marisa something that can be just handed to someone else and still work?

Putting aside that passing powers to others is literally the point of Ability cards, this isn't actually the case. There's only a few specific things that can be moved, and Marisa's got multiple other powers - such as everything her shadow did. It's also because Marisa's using ability powers as a crutch to get around her not understanding her powers - this extracts them as consumable items, that she has no reason not to let others use.

Mike's also taking these for two other reasons. One, she's actually better at using ability cards than Marisa, and two, without them... she barely has any useful powers at all, at least in this arc. The fact that Marisa's power is more easily borrowed than used by it's owner directly is a factor both girls are aware of and very much not happy about.

[?] why after an entire arc establishing that a youkai’s species could change, and that the human side of the ICs were affecting how they grew, did we get Marisa having been raised only months shy of twice as long as Kosuzu was as a ‘useless tube fox’ as a human? Potentially implying that her whole Re/Incarnation is completely pointless?
This is a couple of different mechanics getting muddled together, though tbf that might be because I haven't explained them well.

Basically all characters are some combination of physical and spiritual presence. Flesh and blood vs. magic and soul. The flesh is immutable, and will do it's best to follow the laws of physics and biology at least at any given moment. The spiritual is not, and is not only subject to change and influence but will affect the body as well.

Full youkai are more spirit than flesh. As a result, their species is ultimately changeable, they age as much as they feel like, and they can become far different things over time. Their physical body submits to their mind and the expectations of others. The ICs have been growing up like humans, however, because ultimately half or more of their minds ARE human. This is why youmu's also aged like a half-phantom.

Humans are generally far more physical than spiritual. They will age whether they want to or not, they will basically always stay human except under extreme conditions or another's influence, and they will largely stay nearly the same regardless. Their bodies submit to physics and biology most of all.

Half-youkai usually end up somewhere in the middle of this spectrum, with exactly where depending on the balance of power they have at any given moment. In particular, it's quite common for their spiritual potential to be dormant or inactive for some time after birth, with that potential emerging after a trigger. this means they're humans until they aren't, whether that point is before birth or years into their life. Marisa has aged like a human up till now in no small part because, until a couple of weeks ago, she was functionally indistinguishable from a human. It's only with her memories beginning to stir that her spiritual power has fully awakened.

Other than that, there is a more general disclaimer: Sometimes I just get into something after advertising it and feel like my original idea didn't make sense, or otherwise sucks. so sometimes choices have different consequences than I originally expected. Sorry if it ends up feeling like I've deliberately misdirected you - it's accidental misdirection at worst.

Asakura Rikako was mentioned in both the Akyuu and Youmu arcs, in that she worked with the Tengu after going off the rails with Haru over the Immaterial Children incident...and escalated that into a lynch mob, a burnt down street (Mokou...), and Keine fleeing Gensokyo with her heart broken. Haru, meanwhile, was trying to figure out the why of the incident when this went down.

Speculation is that it was because Rikako's rep was suffering, though we still don't know why she did it, or what she's doing or thinking now.

Now the Immaterial Children are returning, and Rikako is very conspicuously completely excluded from the loop.

Makes sense she'd want to hunt the first credible instance of a loose Immaterial Child down, whether that be to find the truth or to "prove that she was right".

...Of course, it's probably a good thing for her health that she didn't run into Youmu or Akyuu...

...Then again, if one of the others doesn't beat her down, Reimu probably will...

And the Capcha agrees, it says "Judgement".

Rikako being the boss would definitely be interesting but there's something really perfect about Suwako helping Youmu during the whole arc only to be the final boss, and yet Youmu still ended up helping her by the ending.

Also if gooboi is still taking questions

[?] Was Rikako planned to also have black pyre if we took that route? And aside from Suwako, were there any other bosses you had planned to give black pyre to?

AkyuuEscape

>> When Akyuu got to her first destination, there were two rabbits guarding the doorway, looking around frantically. It seemed that there was no getting through them without a fight.

>> But Akyuu wasn’t just a chronicler any more. She pulled herself together, preparing the Lunatic Gun. Carefully setting her pack down, she considered a few strategies. She focused, taking a moment to prepare herself, and made her move.

>> She thought back, pulling a moment from her memory. Something that’d panic him without sending a signal up. A memory of a particularly hectic drill came to mind, and she focused. Thinking back to all the details, the smell of gunpowder, the sting of the rubber rounds, and the voices yelling in confusion, the pounding of her heart. Drawing the memory out of her, pulling and shaping it… and loading the psychic energy into her gun. The cartridge glowed with purple energy.

>> She rounded the corner, firing a shot straight at the male of the two guards before ducking back. He turned to see it, but was unable to dodge the shot slamming into his chest. At once, his eyes began to jerk around wildly in confusion, and he yelled out. Akyuu watched in amusement. As much as it was never pleasant dredging up her own bad memories, there was something undeniably amusing about watching the effects. Like watching a rabbit guard dive behind cover that wasn’t there to dodge a round that had been fired months ago.

>> His partner stuttered, running over to check the yelling guardsman was okay. +My partner’s freaking out! I think he’s hallucinating?!+ She looked around, torn between trying to help or keeping a safe distance from the flailing rabbit and finding the attacker.

>> Akyuu holstered her gun. +I’m right nearby, coming right now!+ She rounded the corner, running as fast as she could. The other rabbit waved her over, eyes marked with clear worry.

>> "He just started screaming and flailing, like a lunatic-" Akyuu’s left knee slammed into her chest, drawing out a strangled cry. The mallet slipped from her grip, and Akyuu flowed around her, pulling an arm around her neck.

>> “Yeah, of course.” Akyuu said, looking at the rabbit’s shocked expression. “That’s why it’s called a Lunatic Gun, dumbass.”

>> The rabbit’s eyes rolled into the back of her head, and Akyuu’s grip loosened as she slipped from consciousness. She stuck her hand into the rabbit’s pocket, fishing out a keycard, and swiping it into the console. The door hissed, and opened.

I'm loving this one too, and the "dragon miko" speech bubble is golden!

This last one made me realize I never posted an image of Haru without the ofuda covering her face, which I did draw some time ago (once when originally making the first design, the other which I drew like eight months ago and never posted).

I'm posting this Haru drawing now because I should have done so a long time ago but I think she feels very dated so I'm going to redraw both her and Aunn (who also has an old design) and post them later.

I'm sorry for not posting drawings for some time. I've been drawing quite some stuff backstage for both R/R and USiL, plus drawing stuff for my personal projects (my goal is to draw every 2hu at least once, as a self-imposed challenge) and I think I've improved a lot lately. There's still lots to improve but I'm feeling great about how these are turning up.

Several pixel art drawings that Kosuka and I made.

We’ve actually been making a bunch of pixel art together for a while, and at some point I wanted to draw a Reisen based on an artist I liked. Then one idea led to another, and in the end we ended up making the moms and main characters of R/R. Kosuka edited most of the protagonists and they turned out really nice though it took us like 3 weeks to finish everything. So enjoy!

[17] Dream about a quiet day sipping tea at a shrine.
[5] Dream about a bookstore with magical tomes within.
[6] Dream about a duel with a ghostly swordswoman.
[3] Dream about a discussion at a beautiful estate.
[19] Dream about an impish, green-haired teacher.
[8] Dream about a dashing young silver-haired gentleman.
[15] Dream about snuggling into something soft, brown, and fluffy.
[21] Dream about… a black-haired woman she didn’t recognise, but…

Risa was so scared.

She sobbed, weakly, pulling her pillow closer, screwing her eyes shut. Trying to stay away, far away, from the youkai outside her crib.

“Heh heh heh… What have we here?” It loomed over her, immense. “And here I thought she was just lying low ‘cos she was scared of us.”

A veiny, horned head with a single scary eye leant in. “But boy, what a prize. Turns out that little brat has a brat of her own, huh?”

“Go ‘way!” Risa yelled, throwing her toy blocks at it. The youkai just chuckled as they bounced off its skull.

“Nah, don’t feel like it. Besides, my boys are making sure your mother’s nice and busy out the front.” He chuckled, straightening up. “Nobody’s coming to save you, bratlet. That’s a promise.”

He lifted something massive, black and lumpy up, grinning. “Tell you what, though; maybe if you scream for your mommy loud enough, she’ll hear you. Let’s see if she can help, huh?”

The little girl shuddered. Faced with the one-eyed glare, her lips trembled as she tried to speak. “M-mama…”

A throaty chuckle emanated from the mocking grin. “Gonna have to be a little louder, kid. She won’t even know you’re gone if that's all you can manage.”

Risa sobbed, trying to yell for help. “Mama… Help me… Mama!”

He rushed forward, roaring in her face. “LOUDER!”

“MAMAAAAAA! HELP ME!” She wailed, as loud as she could.

In the next room over, she heard her mother’s voice.

“Marisa?!”

The youkai laughed, lifting his weapon up, grinning. “Good job, kid. Let’s see how close your mama gets-”

There was the sound of breaking wood. Light came in, from somewhere behind the oni, and he turned his head.

There was a primal, ear-shattering roar.

Long, ropey things reached out, lashing at the youkai. Blue ones twisted around his left arm, bending it in ways arms shouldn’t bend. Red ones raised high, before swinging down - and his other arm fell to the floor, drops of red splattering over the little girl.

He howled in pain, beginning to fall - but the blue ropey things pounced, grabbing him by the throat. He was dragged back, coughing and choking, to what the ropey things came from. To a monster Risa had never seen before.

It was massive, with paws bigger than the little girl’s whole body, and a snake for a tail that was biting someone, smashing them on the ground. The ropey things came from the monster’s back, pulling the oni closer and closer to its real face; a fanged maw with glowing red eyes. Looking at the attacker with endless rage.

“Y-you…” He stared up at the monster, gasping for breath. “Wh-what ARE you-?!”

He tried to pull away, unable to stop himself from being dragged closer. Black clouds swirled around the monster, coiling, preparing to strike. When the blue ropes let go, he gasped for breath, and the black clouds pounced, covering him entirely. Through the mists, Marisa could see him fall to the ground, completely still.

The little girl whimpered, sobbing weakly. “Mama… mama…”

The monster changed. It shrunk down, getting smaller and smaller, and starting to look familiar. Risa stared, as it got up on its hind legs and ran towards her.

“Marisa!” Now it was a bloody woman with black hair, running up to her. “The blood - oh please god, tell me you’re okay!”

The little girl stared up at her. “Mama… I…”

“Mama’s here, Risa!” She tripped over something, coughing as she stumbled into the crib, the tentacles reaching out to steady herself. “It’s safe now, I promise. All the bad guys are-”

Risa grabbed a block, throwing it as hard as she could. It smacked the monster in its face, stopping it cold.

“Mama! Where are you?!” She sobbed, pulling back as far as she could. “Mamaaaaa!”

The monster stared, stunned. “M- Marisa, it’s me, it’s Mama. You’re safe now. There’s nothing-”

She threw another block at it, sobbing. “Mama! MAMAAAAAAA!” She rattled the bars of her crib, calling out.

This wasn’t her mother. Her mother was soft, and laughed, and made everything sound fun even when she was tired. She didn’t smell like blood, or smash up her room, or pull people apart - only monsters did that. The monster sagged, weak at the knees, as the little girl sobbed for her real mother to take her away, to save her.

“...nothing… to be scared of…”

Marisa sighed, spraying a bottle of disinfectant and wiping the countertop down. The dream from last night… she couldn’t stop thinking about it. Had she been back to this stand already? She’d kinda lost track.

“Are you okay, Marisa?” Mike was across from her, sweeping up the dust around another stand. “You’ve been quiet this morning.”

The changeling looked down at the countertop, trying to make out her own reflection. “Just… had a bad dream.”

Or so she hoped. A bad dream made sense, surely? It was almost a hodgepodge of the abilities she herself had used or learnt about over the last couple of weeks. But it all just rang a little too true. And if that was the case… Marisa really had done something terrible, hadn’t she?

The catgirl hummed, looking her over. “About those people chasing you?”

“I- not now. Please.” She hadn’t even considered that part. Hopefully not… but it was impossible to rule out, either. She straightened up, turning to another desk.

“...Sorry.” Mike looked away, ears down. “And sorry for all the trouble last night, too.”

“‘S fine. Sometimes stuff just… happens.” The changeling turned away, towards the center of the plaza.

Marisa straightened up, looking around to inspect the other desks. Frankly, most of them were already clean, to the point that this felt like busywork. Her mind was just beginning to wander again when she saw the fountain in the center of the plaza light up. It was still too early for basically anyone but the most proactive of vendors to show up, but sure enough there were two people entering right through the front.

Two she recognised, in fact. Kasen and Zanmu were emerging from the fountain, in clothes that didn’t look wildly different from what they’d worn yesterday. The only thing that stood out was the oni’s new eyewear - some metallic specs with flip-lenses and other doodads, like some specialty craftsman’s glasses.

“-watching you, Zanmu.” Kasen straightened up, folding her arms and looking around - quickly locking on to the young girls. “Mike, Marisa! How have you been? Working hard for Lady Chimata, I hope?”

“Well, there’s not too much for us to do before the market opens.” Mike shrugged. “So we’re just making sure everything’s nice and clean.”

“I see it’s paying off. The market’s looking great.” The hermit let out an approving hum, as she stepped over to pet the maneki-neko. The catgirl blushed at the older woman’s gentle touch, seeming too bashful to pull away. “Lady Chimata’s being very generous offering you two lodgings, so make sure she knows you appreciate it, alright?”

Zanmu, for her part, just rolled her eyes. “While Kasen’s fawning over the kitten, I have some news, Houjuu Marisa. Something that might be of quite a bit of interest to you.”

“Oh yeah?” Marisa fiddled with the spray bottle’s trigger, looking at the short oni. “Something to do with those glasses?”

“What do you mean? These’re just my shades.” Was Marisa seeing through an illusion, then? Zanmu sent a wink the changeling could only have seen through clear lenses. “What I’ve got isn’t quite your species, but it’s your genus, at least.”

That got everyone’s attention. Kasen spun around, looking at the oni with surprise. “Where did you find it?”

“An educated line of inquiry will do one wonders, y’know.” Zanmu chuckled. “I got a business card off of one Futatsuiwa Mamizou when I was playing decoy for Marisa. I figured that if she was connected to fantasy, and was raising someone as rare as Marisa, she was almost certainly gonna be well-connected. So I thought I’d check a few of the larger magical networks in the real world to see if any names came up.”

“And you found something?” Marisa sat the bottle down, giving the oni her full attention.

“Indeed.” Zanmu smirked triumphantly. “I know now for a fact, Marisa, what you are; a Houjuu.”

There was a pause. Houjuu Marisa stared at the oni, waiting for the other shoe to drop. “What?”

“A Houjuu, huh?” Kasen hummed, looking the changeling over appraisingly. “I mean, it’s possible, but how did you confirm that, in the end?”

“A… Houjuu? That’s a kind of youkai?”

The shorter woman chuckled, leaning on one of the tables. “Aunty Zou had pre-registered her in the Scarlet Talent Agency. They have an expensive outreach program for helping any late bloomers of magical talent catch up on the world’s rules - hoping to get their pick of the litter, I’m sure. And what do I find when I look there, but ‘Houjuu’ listed as her species?” Her smirk stretched from ear to ear.

“But that’s my name.”

“I suppose it would make sense. The powers of unidentifiability would line up, even. But just how did you get access to such a private file?” The hermit folded her arms, glaring down at Zanmu. “I can’t imagine the STA just let you breach privacy willy-nilly.”

“Hey, listen-”

“I have my ways, dear Kasen.” The oni smugly chuckled. “Let us just say that I was able to make a convincing-”

“HEY!” The duo blinked, realising after a moment that Marisa was still in front of them. “Whaddaya mean I’m a Houjuu?! You’re telling me my last name has been a species of youkai this whole time?!”

“Not quite species,” Zanmu corrected, her amusement still clear on her face. “It’s more like a genus, and even that’s not quite accurate.”

“Not what I mean!” Marisa jammed her finger at the others. “You all knew my name this whole time, and nobody said anything?! ‘Hey, Houjuu Marisa, good to see you Houjuu Marisa, is there a chance you might be a Houjuu, Marisa?!”

“I’ve never even heard of Houjuus.” Mike stared up at Kasen, confused. “But surely if you both knew that was a thing, you could have told her.”

“Errr, well, possibly but-” Kasen turned to her companion, who was quite clearly happy to let the hermit clean up the mess she caused. “It’s - it’s a bit of an unusual case, even among youkai. And even then, a lot of Houjuus just inherited the name, they’re not really Houjuus anymore. It’s like…” She paused, trying to pick her words, before something finally came to her. “Ah! Dinosaurs!”

Marisa once again found herself staring at them, lost for words. “Dinosaurs- what are you talking about?!”

“It’s an analogy, an analogy.” Kasen took a moment to compose herself. “Lets say you heard that dinosaurs were alive and well this century, in the real world. Where would you expect to find them?”

The catgirl shrugged, a bit nonplussed. “I guess… like deep in the Amazon, or on an isolated island or something? Somewhere no humans go. Like that ancient tree they found in Australia.”

“Right, of course.” Kasen nodded. “Now imagine that someone told you that they’d found something they’re calling a dinosaur, but they found it in Tokyo. You’d pretty much instantly assume it’s just some normal lizard or something, right? You certainly wouldn’t tell them that a dinosaur’s possible from what you know, because you’d probably think they’re wrong.”

“...I guess if I heard about it…” Mike was clearly unconvinced. “But is it that much? I mean, if that lizard tells me its name is- is Rex or something, why wouldn’t I believe a dinosaur could be in a city?”

“Because even that analogy doesn’t go far enough,” Zanmu said, turning to the shellshocked Marisa. “It’s not just that Houjuu aren’t found in places like Tokyo, it’s that cities can be outright dangerous for them.”

The apparently-houjuu Houjuu looked up at her as she continued. “Houjuu describes a group of… maybe not quite youkai, but at least youkai-like beings, who have never truly gotten a stable form or interpretation of their nature. Think something that’s got multiple conflicting descriptions with no clear winner, all under a single name. Because of this, they are to some degree inherently unstable in a way few youkai are. For most youkai, becoming something meaningfully different from their current selves is a process that can take decades, if not centuries. But if people latch on to an idea of what a Houjuu really is, they can quickly get warped.”

Marisa gulped. “...Warped?”

“If, for example, a bunch of people saw you leaving Sado and thought you were some type of octopus youkai… you could very well have suckers by now. A Houjuu’s very nature can become something irrecognisable in such a short time. At least, that’s the theory.” Zanmu smirked, chuckling at Marisa’s stricken expression. “As a result, most ‘Houjuus’ are just clinging on to old family names, long after they became more mundane types of youkai.”

“And the real ones tend to be incredibly isolated. They stay far away from most other people and any signs of civilization whatsoever, hoping to remain resistant to perceptions that might lock down their forms. Even people as well-travelled as us have probably only met them a handful of times combined.” Zanmu hummed, looking over Marisa again. “...Which makes it all the more surprising there’s a half-Houjuu in the first place. They’re not exactly what you’d expect to be fraternizing.”

“Zanmu, there’s no need to bring that up.” Kasen rolled her eyes. “Regardless, it does raise questions about how your mother was able to hold down a relationship. …Perhaps your powers over unidentifiability are what allowed your mother to stay in civilization, at least for a time? Either that, or she must be something famous yet still unidentified. A mystery culprit of a famous event, or something like that.”

“So there’s a good chance she is famous, but nobody could actually tie her to the event? …Great. So we’re back to square one,” Marisa concluded, defeated. “All we know for certain is that ‘I don’t know’ is even more likely to be a reliable answer, and if people make too many bad guesses, that could genuinely backfire on me?”

“Well, look on the bright side, Marisa. If you really don’t like it, you actually have a good chance at becoming something else.” Mike sighed, looking back down to her broom. “It’s more than some of us can hope for.”

“...Something wrong, Mike?” The hermit sat next to her, reaching out to pet her again. The catgirl didn’t do much to resist, only offering a noncommittal grunt.

“Well, there’s always one reliable fallback.” Zanmu turned, giving Marisa a small smile. “If your Aunt was the one who described you as a Houjuu, that means she expected you’d have a stable enough form to actually live in the city. She certainly knows who you are.”

“And how am I supposed to ask her?” The changeling folded her arms, defiant. “She’s-”

“Did you think intel on your species was all I grabbed?” The oni cut her off, chuckling. “Why, not at all.”

She reached into her pocket, fishing around for something. “After all, I’m the one who met Aunty Zou in the flesh yesterday. Her business card got me to your identity… and with a little more research on her, I’m certain that the person I met was real.”

Marisa looked up at her. “You mean… she’s just under control or something?”

“I think I even know the spell that you’re sensing. Not that it matters. After all, with the right tools in hand… you can see for yourself.” The oni pulled out a handful of talismans, pitch-black with stark white text. “Marisa, would you care for a trade? I think you’ll find that I have exactly what you need.”

One last question to wrap things up.
[?] Was Rikako planned to also have black pyre if we took that route? And aside from Suwako, were there any other bosses you had planned to give black pyre to?
Rikako I'm still playing around with. I do think a pyre is quite possible, but if I go with that, the major problem is that I've been writing under the perception she's a true human. Which means that the pyring would be rather short and fatal.

Suwako was long intended to be the first true pyre, though; to the point that if you'd chosen the Rikako route, Suwako would likely have kidnapped Akyuu at the end of the chapter to become the antagonist of the reunion arc proper. Youmu's story was the one I expected y'all to do last, until the talk of symmetry started up.

Again, apologies for the delay. I think part of the problem is that with this very foreshadow-heavy and serious story, it's quite a bit of effort to write it and get it right. This is ultimately a passion project, but I've screwed over passion projects before by going too hard into them without a plan.

So I've decided to mix things up a bit, with a seperate story. Something entirely divorced from R/R, and very experimental in it's nature. But I hope I can have fun writing it, and you all will have fun reading it as well.

Curious? If so, you can find it here: >>/youkai/31866

Zanmu is one sly, charismatic, glorious bastard, isn’t she? Well, I at least have an idea on how Marisa and Reimu are going to meet again now.

...Oh...

Oh god, poor Nue...

No wonder Marisa reacted so hard about the "Shapeshifters" who "replaced" her Auntie and neighbors, she's got some deep-seated, if misguided, trauma about it...

No wonder she bolted outta Sado so hard...

Wel... the good part is that Nue from this timeline showed up, Minimarisa described a little of her personality in the flashback/dream.

The bad part is that Marisa got scared of Nue during that fight.

I hope that when Marisa meets momNue again, she apologizes to her for not recognizing her that night.

Ok yeah that’s a pretty funny image. Although, something about Zanmu wearing glasses feels very wrong to me.
