Well, This here is a Collaboration effort between myself and my best friend/proofreader Wanderlost. We will be taking turns writing the updates. This first update is written by myself. We hope you enjoy, and now without further ado... Retribution!
-------
Where am I? Who am I? What am I? These questions flood your head every night. There are no dreams, only questions. You swim in an endless black ocean with nothing but your thoughts to keep you company. Nothing but your thoughts, and that voice.

“Why do I exist?” The voice says. It shares your voice, a voice of compassion that hides your true emotions. The voice is all around you. “That was your next question wasn’t it?”

You don’t respond. You never respond. This voice is persistent, plaguing you even during your waking hours. It’s not that you’re crazy; it’s just what you are.

“How does it go again? Where am I, who am I, what am I, why do I exist, why do we exist, and what is this place? Am I right?”

He’s right, but you’ll never say it. It’s easiest to pretend he isn’t there.

You ponder the questions one more time. “Where am I?” You whisper into the air. “Physically I’m in bed, mentally I’m in swimming in an ocean of doubt.” The voice snorts as if annoyed. “Who am I? I am Kei. What am I? I am a half-youkai.” You remind yourself that you aren’t human, that you never will be. Forever trapped between human and youkai, never to be accepted by either.

“Hey, kid, why do you ask yourself these things every night? They don’t get you any closer to enlightenment or whatever you call it.” There is obvious disapproval in his voice. In your voice.

You ask because it is what you have always done. You continue with your nightly mantra. “Why do I exist? I am unsure. Why do we exist?” We meaning youkai in general. “I don’t know that either.”

A faint light appears on the horizon, the light of the rising sun. “Well kid, looks like your time is up.” You say nothing as you stare at the sunrise. The sun acts like a clock in your dreams, much like it does in reality. When it rises here, it rises in the waking world. The voice sighs before saying, “Kid, I know you aren’t going to listen, but I’d be stupid to not warn you. Continue denying your heritage and your emotions will boil over, causing you to destroy everything you care about.”

Your heritage, the heritage of killers. You are half human and half youkai. Your youkai half is greatly feared by those you know.

“A youkai of revenge,” it continues, “must get revenge, no matter how petty it seems to others. We must also inspire feelings leading to vengeance in others. By not doing this, you smother the power on which you live.”

You’ve heard this speech before, a thousand times. You’ve never listened to it. For ten years now you’ve been fine. Hell, you’ve been better than ever for the past three years since the Myouren Temple showed up. Byakuren has given you a place to stay when things at home get out of hand. They’re like a family to you.

“Okay kid, time to wake up,” the voice says with a sigh.

-----

“GOOD MORNING!!!!” A familiar voice screeches.

Groaning, you open your eyes and check to make sure your ears aren’t bleeding. You look at the source of the voice and say, “Good morning Kyouko.” For the past two years, you’ve woken up and she’d be the first thing you see. Not a bad sight. Her teal hair and floppy brown doglike ears, her smooth skin and unwavering smile help drain the tiredness from your spirit. Unfortunately it doesn’t do much for your aching body.

You force yourself into a sitting position. You work the kinks out of your joints as you stretch and while as you do so you see a large clump of bruises on your left arm. Kyoko seems to notice as well. “Kei,” she says hesitantly staring at your arm.

“It’s nothing.” You stop her before she can say anything else. You’d rather not have her worrying about you. “Do you mind stepping out so I can get dressed?” She frowns but nods and walks out of the room. “Damn it,” you mumble as you climb out of bed.

You don’t want anyone to worry about you so you try to do your best to hide your problems. Unfortunately you can’t hide the biggest problem, your father, or, rather your step-father. Your real father was a youkai of revenge that raped your mother. As a result, her husband, the man you call father, despises you and all youkai. Your mother, on the other hand. loves you with all her heart, just as she does with your half-sister.

You run your right hand across the bruises. You returned late after dinner last night because you were reading about revenge youkai at Kosuzu’s shop and lost track of time. When you returned home, your father was waiting for you. His hatred of youkai has him paranoid that you’re plotting something and he is determined to find out what, even if it means beating you. The purple flesh on your arm is only the most recent of his “interrogations”.

You worry about your mother and sister so you do your best to keep it a secret. In fact the only two that know what your father does to you are Byakuren and Shou. You told Byakuren yourself; in fact you tell her almost everything. She’s kind of like a second mother to you. Shou, on the other hand is training you to fight saying that you can’t let people walk all over you all of the time.

You shake your head and put on your old brown tunic and an old pair of slacks. You slide your feet into the rough field boots and slip on your gloves. Most of your clothes are at the temple now, along with a good chunk of your belongings as tonight will be the last night you spend in this house. That’s okay, the temple is only on the outskirts of the village, so it’s not like you’re moving to another village.

You take one last look around the room for anything you might have forgotten. “Oh right,” you say as you scold yourself mentally. There mounted on the wall next to your bed is the one thing you’ll need today more than anything else. Shou is taking you hunting so it’s best if you take it now.

-Choose one
[] A bandolier of throwing knives
[] Two daggers, one serrated and the other plain
[] A simple short sword that Murasa dragged up from the bottom of the lake
[] Long sword, a gift from Shou when you started your training
[] Long Bow, it’s nothing special, your dad let you have it when he got a new one
[] Short Bow, Nue seemed fond of this but let you have it after a while
[] Spear, Shou used to carry this around but decided it would serve you better
[] Hand Axe, it may not be fancy but it gets the job done
[] Write in (Be reasonable)

-Strength = The amount of physical force you can exert and how much you can carry.

-Danmaku = Effectiveness in spell card duels.

-Magic = Proficiency with all types of magic.
-Will = Mental resilience and stubbornness.

-Intelligence = Knowledge and capacity to learn.

-Mobility = Athleticism and evasion.

-Charm/Intimidate = Persuasiveness and first impressions.

-Endurance = Damage resistance and capacity for strenuous activity.

Dual daggers - shank two fairies at once, shank one fairy twice. Defenses made of tissue paper really take the fun out of life, however.

Okay, We are calling the vote now with the following.
[X] Shortbow
From best to worst
[X]Mobility
[X]Intelligence
[X]Charisma
[X]Endurance
If you are wondering how we came to this decision of what traits are in these positions we simply chose the ones that had the most votes in these particular spots. Mobility had won "Best" as well as "Good" but it had more votes for the former so the runner-up to "Good" made the list. Intelligence also won "Bad" but we went with the runner-up for that one too.

So basically we have a highly mobile Arcane Archer who has a small learning disability and is easily winded. Wow, just wow. You would think with Mobility as the best you would want Endurance to be normal. Wanderlost will begin writing later after after we talk about the best way to go about writing a character of this style. In the meantime check out our stories on /others/.

>Intelligence is marked as Good
>Learning disability

Yep, definitely a learning disability going on here.

Update will be up in a few days. Or tomorrow.
No. 169565

I think you probably mean "A highly mobile Arcane Archer that has above average intelligence, but is bad at persuasion (taking you mean Charm when you say Charisma) and gets winded easily."
No. 169583
>>169565
That is exactly what I meant. This is precisely why I need a proofreader.
No. 169584
It seemed like a lot of people forgot that they were voting for what we are good at and what we are bad at, with the stuff not mentioned left as 'normal'.

So now we're a speedy, cunning, bow user who lacks social skills and runs 50 metres before collapsing. This will be hilarious, will read every update.

Yea the "highest in each category" thing kinda screwed us over. I can understand this is OP(s) way of compromising, but to my knowledge; clicking "random" in a character creation RPG never turns out well.

I was ok with endurance being the worst simply because magic was the highest. When have you even seen a mage sprinting places? Never. cuz that's just not how wizards get down.

Now I'm not even sure what to think.
No. 169640
>>169595
>Now I'm not even sure what to think.
I am. Something like 'that sounds kind of silly'. should have had it split into archetypes with traits already chosen for each or at least the thing with ties explained ahead of time.

And, on that note, what about the traits that didn't make the cut? Is our endurance-impaired protag going to be average in these or comically inept or what?
No. 169641
>>169640
We have them all, we were just choosing which ones we wanted to be better or worse than average (for a half youkai at least).
Some people didn't understand this and thought we were picking things we wanted to be more than average, from best to worst.

So we end up with this hilarious character.
No. 169643
Okay, Wanderlost and I had talked about it. If you are unhappy with the current build we will allow a re-vote. We will provide preset builds and allow write-ins. So until then please wait patiently.
No. 169645
>>169643
I certainly wouldn't mind a revote if it means a nonderp character.
No. 169646
>>169643
I actually would like to see a story with a derp built character. Shenanigans galore I believe!
No. 169669
Alright, we're calling for a re-vote here since there seems to be quite a bit of complaining due to our wording being unclear. All stats not marked are left as average.

We decided to give you a suite of sample builds to help you along. Each of us contributed one for each weapon. Here they are:

Ninja - Throwing Knives - A ninja? How cliche. You’re an agile fighter whose social skills can cause opponents to drop their guard. Unfortunately you are a little weak and have only the very bare minimum of Magical power.
Mobility (BEST)
Charisma (GOOD)
Strength (BAD)
Magic (WORST)

Rogue - Two Daggers - What a cunning thief you are. You wisely uses your superior speed and agility to deal damage and get out of danger quickly. Sadly you are lacking the drive that most people have and can barely create bullets, much less use them effectively.
Mobility (BEST)
Intelligence (GOOD)
Will (BAD)
Danmaku (WORST)

Scout - Short Sword - As Scout you can go long periods of time without resting and can fight against stronger foes. Though you lack magical prowess and are nearly unable to think for yourself much less disobey orders.
Endurance (BEST)
Strength (GOOD)
Magic (BAD)
Will (WORST)

Duelist - Long Sword - Honor is for the weak, you know that right? You are skilled with the sword and you have an above average speed and flexibility. You prefer one on one combat. Your magic is subpar, and your Danmaku is nearly nonexistent.
Strength (BEST)
Mobility (GOOD)
Magic (BAD)
Danmaku (WORST)

Arcane Archer - Longbow - You are an archer who needs not fear running out of arrows for each arrow is actually a bolt of magic. The level of magic you have mastered is aided by your mobility which allows you to avoid oncoming attacks, but is offset by your subpar intellect and how easily tired you can get.
Magic (BEST)
Mobility (GOOD)
Intelligence (BAD)
Endurance (WORST)

Tracker - Short bow - It’s genius how you use your skills of observation to find evidence of your prey no matter how faint it may be. Your mobility allows you to climb heights in search of a better vantage point. But your physical strength is muted and you will do just about anything you are told.
Intelligence (BEST)
Mobility (GOOD)
Strength (BAD)
Will (WORST)

Lancer - Spear - You are a smooth talker whose words lull his foes into a false sense of security only for him to use his above average mobility to close in and strike. While you have trouble disobeying orders, you will if it goes against your beliefs. You is terrible at magic, but is capable of using some of the basics. You’re not one to make the first move.
Charm (BEST)
Mobility (GOOD)
Will (BAD)
Magic (WORST)

Berserker - Hand Axe - Remind me to never make you angry. As a berserker you are a tank, hard to kill and a heavy hitter, unfortunately you have a small learning disorder and are unable to use magic. You run headlong into the fray with little regard for personal safety.
Endurance (BEST)
Strength (GOOD)
Intelligence (BAD)
Magic (WORST)

Assassin - Throwing Knives - Being part youkai has it’s advantages. You move quickly and have a natural gift for magic. Indeed, your youkai parentage makes you the ideal predator at night. On the other hand, your natural inclination toward lethal combat causes others to find you unsettling.
Mobility (BEST)
Magic (GOOD)
Danmaku (BAD)
Charm (WORST)

Trickster - Two Daggers - If there’s one thing you’ve always been good at, it’s dealing with people. A silver tongue and a sharp mind help you get attention and seize the advantage. Strength isn’t measured by your ability to swing a sword (an ability which you are sadly lacking in). It’s measured by the bonds you make, the people who seek to help and protect you.
Charm (BEST)
Intelligence (GOOD)
Strength (BAD)
Endurance (WORST)

Guardian - Short Sword - You loathe violence. Whether due to your training or a fear of unleashing the beast within, you naturally eschew attacks that endanger your opponents’ lives. Though your discipline and danmaku practice are excellent, your emphasis on mental training has left your body rather lacking by comparison.
Danmaku (BEST)
Will (GOOD)
Strength (BAD)
Mobility (WORST)

Hero - Long Sword - A hero isn’t measured by the strength of his arm, but by his refusal to give up in the face of impossible odds. That said, being able to actually lift your sword goes a long way toward being able to face those odds. You tend to favor close combat, though your long distance options suffer for it.
Will (BEST)
Strength (GOOD)
Danmaku (BAD)
Magic (WORST)

Sniper - Longbow - Youkai are naturally gifted with tremendous strength and superb senses. Though you aren’t on the level of a full blooded youkai, you can match it with magic. Add a bow into the equation, and you can take out a target from far beyond it’s field of vision. Of course, everything has it’s price. Your emphasis on a few, monstrously powerful shots is the antithesis of danmaku and the huge amount of energy it takes to make your shots leaves practically none for anything else.
Strength (BEST)
Magic (GOOD)
Danmaku (BAD)
Endurance (WORST)

Tactician - Short bow - Victory is not merely determined by the powers you have, but by the manner in which you use them. It isn’t a power exactly, but you are very intelligent. In addition to a wide range of fairly in depth knowledge, you’ve learned quite a bit about military tactics. Specifically, you know how to control the battlefield and use the terrain to your advantage. In spite of this, your actual combat experience is limited and you aren’t suited for fighting on the front lines.
Intelligence (BEST)
Danmaku (GOOD)
Mobility (BAD)
Strength (WORST)

Hoplite - Spear - “Endure. In enduring, grow strong.” You can’t remember where you heard that. You aren’t the brightest you suppose. But you took those words to heart. Your body is steel, your will iron. You are unstoppable.
Endurance (BEST)
Will (GOOD)
Intelligence (BAD)
Magic (WORST)

Sage - Hand Axe - If there’s one thing people respect, it’s power. You’ve never been the quickest or most likable, but you have your own strengths. You’d like to think that being what amounts to a walking magical siege engine more than covers for your deficiencies. When your opponents see a veritable wall of magic bearing down on them with the force of an army, they tend to agree with that view.
Magic (BEST)
Danmaku (GOOD)
Charisma (BAD)
Mobility (WORST)

and of course, if none of those sound appealing at all,

[X] Write-in option (Please name your builds. It makes counting the votes much less of a hassle.)

That's not danmaku, that's the spellcard duel rules. They can apply to any kind of fight, hence the fighting games. They're just usually applied to danmaku fights since that's the most common in Gensokyo. Danmaku means "bullet hell", i.e., ranged attack spam of any type.
