"Wait." You say, putting your hands up and shrugging Rinnosuke off. "I'm an Oni?" "That's what Sigma sees. Oni DNA, Oni blood, Oni thoughts." Rika says. "But it was a metaphor." You say, utterly bewildered. "You're an Oni." Rinnosuke says, adjusting his glasses. "No big deal. I'm not human either." "You're ... not?" You ask, frowning at him. "Sigma reads him as half-human, half-youkai, another little revelation when we found out Sigma could pick up species at a distance." Rika says. Rinnosuke coughs into his hand. "It doesn't really mean much." He says. "Whatever was used to tamper with our memories also removed our recall of what exactly we are, which for some reason interferes with the ability to use it." You frown. "What do you mean?" "Well. Whoever set up the town as a prison also wants us to think we're plain humans." He says. "And we're not?" You ask. You don't have horns, you're not carrying a gigantic gourd of Sake, or wrapped in chains.
But you did punch a hole in concrete. And bend a solid steel baseball bat.
"You're an Oni." Rika says. "Deal with it." You shake your head. This is ... surprisingly relieving, actually. "So what about my name? How does Sigma do that?" You ask. Rika swivels around in her chair. "That's a little more complex, but it shouldn't take long, a few minutes but ... er, well ... you'll have to touch him." She glances at Sigma, just staring at the three of you with his one, gigantic eye. The silence is almost creepy. "And you promise that's completely safe?" You ask Rinnosuke. "As far as we can tell, yes." He says. "It's just Sigma's natural way of communicating, but it's a shock if you've never done it before. Perfectly harmless, I promise you."
You look at Sigma, staring into the eye. It looks back at you. "Am I allowed to touch you?" You ask out loud. Rika glances at the computer screen. "Sigma says yes." She says, smirking at you. You glance at her. "Before I forget." You say, pointing at her with a look of deadly seriousness on your face. "You owe me a cake now." She grins. You haven't really taken a good look at her before now, but that comment about 'eating cake off her ass' threw you off a little. She's far shorter than you, about the same height as Satori, sitting in that chair her feet barely touch the floor. Her figure is currently hidden under all those baggy clothes, but she's cute with her hair in braids like that. Such a harmless looking girl, calmly pointing a pistol at your head. Perhaps you should make a mental note to be careful around her. "Gonna take me up on eating it off my ass, too?" She asks sardonically. "We'll see." You mutter, tempted, but thinking about more important things right now.
You turn back to Sigma. It just stares.
[ ] "Why is Sigma so important? A machine to detect species can't be worth fighting a war over, what's he for?" [ ] "Okay Sigma. Time to uh ... communicate." Touch Sigma.
"Okay Sigma." You say, looking into the eye. "Time to uh ... " Oh wow, this feels really weird. "Communicate, yeah. Time to communicate." "Just don't freak out." Rinnosuke says. "It will feel unnatural, but it's safe." "Enjoy!" Rika says, far too cheerfully. You reach out with your right hand and Sigma's eye moves, following your motion as you place you hand atop the sphere. It's warm. Like flesh. Sigma just sits there. "Nothing's happen-"
Something floods your mind, like liquid honey seeping between the whorls of your brain. You can't speak, you can't see, you can't feel. But you don't need to.

I like it. I'm not sure losing our name entirely would be a good thing, either - if it's something this group hasn't encountered before, they may well kill us for it. They're definitely paranoid enough.
Story is set in Japan. Our character is surrounded by people with Japanese names. Our character is ostensibly Japanese himself. A Japanese name here is not weeaboo: it is setting appropriate.
If our character were from Russia, we would choose a Russian name. If our character were from England, we would choose an English name. If our character were from Germany, we would choose a German name.
However, our character is from Japan, and so we chose a Japanese name. Savvy?
>>80564 What about Marisa, Alice, Wriggle, and other distinctly non-Japanese names? Saying we have to choose a Japanese name because it's set in Japan is nonsense, especially in this case since this CYOA is pretty wonky with languages.
No, the story is set in "Gensokyo", an alternate reality full of creepy crawlies, of which the main character is apparently a recent immigrant of, with barely an idea of who he was before he came here, other than he's a demon.
We're in a story where every other character has a Japanese name and we've already been told that everything is being put into English for the sake of reading. Want us to just go around being called John Smith then?

Spacial anomaly? Is that where we are now? This town?
Than- ... are you mocking me?
//who knows //perhaps
//ha ha ha
Just show me the mapping thingy.

Suddenly your sight returns. Or something very much like sight. A bubble hangs in the darkness, a bubble of blue sky, green grass, roads, houses, trees, tiny people and cars in motion. The bubble slowly turns on it's axis, showing you the town and outlying areas from all different directions. This is what we're inside? Why?
//border [type-171YUKARI] porous tri-layer detected //impassable from current position //more data needed
So we're stuck here? And this Yukari woman made this place?
//ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
What's so funny?
She's not a woman?
//treating [171YUKARI] as woman would be amusing
Oh? What is she?

[x] Ask sigma a question: Does he know anything about Yukari's motivation for doing all this.
I think we're fighting the hive now, so those combat reports would be useful.
//rika has them already
Can I see them from you?
Sorry! I'm curious.

Well, at least you know why Sigma is so important now. He's some kind of ancient war machine, abet a badly damaged and stranded one.
//you want some of this damage?
No. Thank you.
So why is Yukari after you? If you're not capable of being a threat to her then why is she bothering?
//we gave them hell

Ah. I see. But why is Yukari after you now? I assume you crashed here, so why is she going to all this trouble?

[x] "You said I'm an oni, and I know I'm strong. What other special abilities do I have?" [x] "Do you know who or how many people are working for Yukari?" [x] "What is Yukari's goal with this place?" [x] "Thank you, Sigma. Get some rest."
[X] "You said I'm an oni, and I know I'm strong. What other special abilities do I have?" [X] "What is Yukari's goal with this place?" [X] ...Think you can do anything if Rika goes back on her promise of me eating cake off her ass?
You said I'm an Oni. I know that means I'm strong but what else does that mean for me?
But what does that mean?
//try drinking ethanol
//you are mocking my laugh
Sort of. Sorry
//oni are commonly gifted with: //strength in excess of body mass ratio //endurance far in excess of standard human //mild regeneration capacities //gastronomic resilience //class 9 passive telepathy [emotional-based lie detection]
All that? Wow.
I will. But I have another question. Do you know how many people are working for Yukari?
//previous individuals under the influence of [171YUKARI] number 1719486 //I have killed most of them
I mean people within the town, the reality bubble, or whatever you call it.
//I am stuck in this room
... yes. You are.
//before that I was buried under approximately 50 feet of soil and rock
//I do not know who is working for yukari
I don't suppose you have any idea what Yukari's goal with this place is?
[X] Think you can do anything if Rika goes back on her promise of me eating cake off her ass? [X]Is there anything I can do to help you recover?
>I'd rather not demean what may be our last conversation with an alien intelligence with stupid shit. Sigma answered one of our questions with "I nuked it hard". Sigma is undoubtably awesome There's no way he won't amuse us with this one.
