It feels like recently there has been a massive influx of newfags to the boards. Of course, this wouldn't be a big problem if not for the fact that the newfags, on top of being newfags, are just plain old fags. It's like we have a bunch of miniature ReijiTabibitos running around.

The shit that some of them write is atrocious, and you know which ones I'm talking about. It makes the whole fucking site look bad. It makes it look like some grotesque abortion of fanfiction.net where people can just dump shit on here and ignore the posts that tell them to fuck the fuck off.

Surely I cannot be the only one that feels this way.

Wiseman should have been mocked and driven out a long time ago. His godawful thread should have been a shitstorm, his posts all over the board should have dozens of anons calling him out, and the people in IRC should have had the balls to call him the faggot he is the second he joined the channel.

Instead, everyone just seems to ignore or tolerate him. This is our greatest failure.

I'm with you Anon. Somewhere down the line, we've grown apathetic. We don't call shit out anymore, We just let it fester and we ignore it. It's become a fucking cancer and it just makes the site look bad. Well, we can't let this shit fly. We need to call shit shit and faggots faggots. Let's pick up our pitchforks and torches anonymous, some fags need to get their status set to told.

Ah good old elitism, why don't we just close down the site, since it's clear the old blood isn't enough to keep it going.

Funny for a group of folks driven off of /jp/ in the first place.
No. 91
That sort of elitism died a long time ago on 4chan and on /jp/.
Just sad to see that it now died here too. Proud of something and a status quo, those things are gone.
You can't fight the change, new people will come who do not wish to integrate and instead drag it down.
No. 95
Well, there were some attempts to shoot wiseman down, both on IRC and the boards. It never caught on, unfortunately.
No. 99
Everyone complaining about elitism is a fucking newfag. We've always lashed out at things that don't conform to our standards and the whole problem we have now is because the userbase has stopped doing that. For the past year the site has been heading downhill but Holy fucking us up really pushed it onto us. J->E, Wiseman, Choja and others have come over and don't even bother looking at how the boards and people act before throwing their weight around. It's people like this that we need to rip a new one for the site to have a decent ratio of quality works.
No. 101
Hm. If you all feel so strongly about it, you should probably go on IRC and tell HY and Teruyo. They are, after all, the people who run the site.

Krisslanza was lashed out on her first run.
Some guy named FrozenTuna wrote shit on /sdm/ and was attacked.
I heard MikoSpark was attacked and quickly reformed. I haven't ever touched that story so I don't know for sure.

Lots of people say J to E is shit. Of course, a decent number of people also read his story and vote in it. I've browsed through it, never been able to read the damn thing, but someone described it as "watching a train wreck and you just want to see how bad it can get". Like watching Code Geass. The thing is that no matter how bad his or other stuff is, it's still being read by people on this site. I don't know if some people actually think it's good, or if it's the writer secretly voting for himself with a "oh god why won't people read my shit ;_;" attitude, or if it's a case of the writer bringing in their friends (I've noticed this is a case for Choja; suddenly he and Sakura Rurouni appeared on this site), but whatever the case people are still reading for voting for this "shit". I can't say for certain, but I think it's a fairly good possibility that if someone tries posting a story and doesn't get a single vote after an update or a single positive comment that they'd get discouraged and leave. This is, of course, also not what is happening for the "low tier" writers on this site.
No. 107
Why do some people suggest that others post constructive criticism if they don't like something a writer is doing?

Okay, here's the thing: it's really not our fucking job to critique. We're not training writers, here, we're reading stories, and if your story isn't any good, we don't want you. Hell, I even went above and beyond and actually tried to explain why his story wasn't any good, hoping that potential new writers might see it and reconsider their own stories with a critical eye, but it hasn't seemed to do any good.

>>89
Elitism is one of those words like "puritan" that's gained a strongly negative implication, despite the concept itself being sound. We should be elitist, in the same way that, say, professional sports leagues should be elitist: there's plenty of Internet out there for poor and mediocre writers, but we want better than that for our little corner.

>>105
Relying on mods to set community standards is a bad idea. Besides, HY learned his lesson from his early escapades as a mod; I sincerely doubt he'll ban anyone.

I don't think starting shitstorms are the solution either; this new breed of writer seems rather resistent to them. The only solution that comes to mind is playing >>84's game and giving them what they claim to want: criticism. Go through every update and explain to them where they've gone horribly, horribly wrong. Either they'll get butthurt and leave, their readers will come to realize that they're shit, or they'll defy the odds and actually bring their writing up past the threshold of mediocrity.
No. 114
I haven't seen much in the way of constructive criticism myself, but a fair amount of praise for some of my characters in the story and plenty of discussion, including one instance where a thread got pushed past autosage by twenty posts or so.

No talk about how I'm doing with the story. It shouldn't be 'no news is good news'.
Though I have been told once to reduce my update speed, and I have to ask: Has that happened before?
No. 115
>>114
You. This isn't a place for fishing for comments. We're discussing shit.

It's not that they're resistant to shitstorms, it's that when have you seen a real, actual shitstorm? We get one anon or two that speaks out and everyone else just drones on. We need a shitstorm of legend, one that will wash all of the stuck shit away.

Gentlemen. I love shitstorms. And I desire a shitstorm that is like hell.

Wasn't intended as a potshot, just a comparison to what happened to /b/.
Disclaimer: I never went on /b/. It was shit before I discovered 4chan and started f5ing /a/. All of my information on what happened to /b/ is from when I used to read ED, and my source for "/b/ was once good" comes from a handful of threads I've seen that were not mindless meme repeition and actually had a bit of wit behind them, unlike modern day 4chan.

From what I've read, /b/ had a way of dealing with camwhores: Tits or GTFO. If they actually show tits, it changes to GTFO. The camwhores did not receive any positive attention, just hostility, whether or not they gave into the pressure to show their goods. Thus they quickly left, seeking attention elsewhere. As 4chan became more popular it attracted more camwhores - and also dipshit users that were actually interested in some slut posing on a webcam. The result was that the camwhores began to stick around, as they could get attention from these new users, and as the new users grew in number the old users had less effect with their standard mantra, hostility, etc. This also happened with every other shitgroup that accumulated on /b/; camwhores and followers are just one example, and it's what resulted in modern day cesspool /b/.

The THP analogy is when a shitty writer brings in shitty friends. Which is bound to happen, as when people find a cool site they're very likely to tell all their friends. Thus to compare to the previous example, the writers are the camwhores, their friends are the 13 year old boys interested in them. I'd like to reiterate that it is not really a potshot at you; I don't read your story so I don't know if it's any good or not. However the analogy stands if you drop the negative connotation - Sakura Rurouni did not post on this board before you started writing her. She came here solely because you came here. You brought in a user that was already interested in what you would write, meaning that you wouldn't ever have
>but I think it's a fairly good possibility that if someone tries posting a story and doesn't get a single vote after an update or a single positive comment that they'd get discouraged and leave.

I hope you can at least see how that can be a problem, even if you aren't someone contributing to it. When Krisslanza first posted, lots of people were asking for her to be banned simply to avoid her bringing in any retarded friends; doubly so since the OP mentioned that her friends suggested she write a CYOA.

I haven't ever seen you vote in one of the few stories I still follow, and other people are saying that you pretty much just waltzed in here and started doing your own thing. So do this, if you haven't already:
Read WUiG. Everything that was posted. Check the archives on the TouhouVN forum.
Then read MiG.
Then read SDM:LA/EoSD. And F:LA. And RAaN. And maybe some other old stuff that's considered classic but I can't think of right now.
Then read some stories active now. Stuff you've heard is good, stuff you've read the OP to and it seems interesting, and hell even some stuff you've heard isn't good for some variety.
Read all of that. For gods sake get acquainted with a place before you start doing shit.

>We will judge you, and we will find you unworthy. It is a trial by fire, and we won't even think about turning down the flames until you finally understand.

>Some of you are smart enough to realize that, when you go online, it's like entering a foreign country ... and you know better than to ignorantly fuck with the locals. You take the time to listen and think before speaking. You learn, and by learning are gladly welcomed.

J to the E is the biggest cancer on this site since Reiji and YAF left. It's hilarious listening to him try to justify a Metaknight crossover in IRC* but that isn't worth seeing his terrible shit on the front page of the main board every fucking day.

• Jerl's dumb, autistic stories
• Wiseman's terrible votes and ideas
• Votespam
• The stupid shit Wiseman says on IRC
• The stupid shit Anonymaster says on IRC
• The fact that Wiseman's story might go for Meiling or Sakuya or Patchy, and in doing so, make even one person less inclined to vote for them in a story worth reading
• The protagonist in Distilled Encounters from Festive Times
• Wiseman
• HY not updating and starting new stories and not updating
• Angry Desu not updating and starting new stories and not updating
• All you other lazy faggots who aren't updating

What else...R.I.M.'s Archetype of Self looks like a Jerl story with good writing and 9000% more sex, I can't bring myself to try reading it. Glasnost is slowly writing the best currently-updating story on the site. Princess Tepes needs to come back and write. Dr. Doujin needs to come back and write. Ranmilia needs to come back and write. Stories need more discussion and less blind bandwagoning. Sakuya needs more votes in Gensokyo High. IRC needs less tildes. I need more sleep.

Considering I don't even know who Jerl is, it's kind of difficult to actually compare my work to his.
And the sex line is grossly exaggerated. Two full H-scenes that anon damn near unanimously voted for and provided critique on, plus two instances of minor smut across six threads doesn't seem over the top. But hearing you complain about my work without having properly read it, that's like whining about a game you haven't played.

So provide a link to Jerl's work so I can read it for myself, or tell me the name of his story so I can go look it up in the archives.

Though I do agree with a fair few of your points though, especially regarding those writefags who haven't updated in a while.

What kind of makes me sit back and wonder is why these individuals elect to label themselves with anything other than 'Anonymous.' Without exception, anyone that has utilized a name/trip before (if ever) becoming an author has been fairly insufferable. Perhaps labeling/trying to stand out is a symptom of their condition, perhaps morons are harder to identify when they're anon (but this apparent 'Arrogant Sagefag' has me thinking otherwise). Anyway, it's always a good rule of thumb that if a name isn't immediately associated with a story, I'd bet on them being a nuisance.

Oh look, Wiseman updated again. Now, since he explains away people ragging on his story by saying things like:

<Wiseman|Writing> I think my detractors in that thread like to play up the worse parts as to fuel their rage. (They never bothered with the more recent posts)

His current writing must be good! Or at least decent. Right?

>I proceed to ask Ran, “Mind if I talked with you some, that is if you’re not too busy.” I wonder what Yukari’s up to; most likely harassing someone. “Hope the last few days weren’t that rough, with your job being as it is.” I add.

Okay that’s awkward, but it’s only the first line. The next one must be better!

>“I’m actually rather glad to talk with you, since it helps me to get to know the person that seems to have gotten both Yukari and Chen’s interests. As far as my job goes, it’s really not that hard at this point. It’s just general maintenance of the boundary, housework and damage control. Damage control is at this point easy after enough times. But it is very nice to hear that someone’s concerned, thank you for that.” Ran responds with a smile.

Ugh. Lets skip forward a bit.

>Nemo’s on my mind as I ask, “Is there any other hidden events in Gensokyo’s history, such as what happened with Nemo the Hero?” I’m curious about what might have been hidden from most.

Wait, Nemo? Surely he doesn’t mean

>“Excluding personal histories, Reimu and Marisa have been resolving incidents since the age of around 14, in what are known as PC-98 games. The Makai incident was the last major one of that era, which opened up the door for various smaller incidents in Gensokyo. ZUN changed his preferred medium to celebrate this, I do hear he quickly did some adjusting, causing some confusion among the fans. Of course out of all those that played a role in that small era, only a few are around to interact. As far the Nemo’s quest, he actually met many people even before they were unveiled in the games. Yukari assigned me to be his guide, since back in those days; she did work from the shadows. I wished I’d have kept a better eye on him. You would be surprised at how one reckless action almost got the village obliterated. You should seek out Keine if you want to know more, since she’s actually chronicled his adventures. You could ask others in Gensokyo about him. I do not think Lady Remilia or Patchouli would know much considering how they waited until that died down before their incident.” Ran answered in a long but interesting lecture.

>I answer, “Thanks, but what kind of guy was he like? I get the impression he was a great guy.” I wonder what he was like considering how there’s not really any heroes in the outside world.

>Ran answers with a serious look, “He was a kind man willing to avoid violence whenever he can, even after his fateful first encounter with Yuuka turned him into a Youkai. It was his insight, understanding, and kindness that got him through his many adventures. But his fatal flaw would be he lacked the raw combat instinct, so what considerable power he did have could not be utilized properly. But from what I heard of you from them, that isn’t a problem with you. If anything, it’s your drive for violence that should be kept in check.

He does mean that Nemo. Where does he get off

>Smirking, I answer, “I’ll try, but some things just gotta be killed thoroughly. I can’t stand scumbugs and other things that harm the innocent. Sure it’s not the pacifistic method, but sometimes the only way to drive your point home is with a sword.” Just like that time seeing scumbugs provokes violent impulses that I’ve been holding back for the most part. Perhaps it was causing my Youkai nature to start acting up.

What

>As I thought about things I notice something behind Ran: Yukari, now normal popping up behind a gap. “This seems like that time again, Ran! You know which time it is” She says causing a blush from Ran. I grab my blanket just in case it is what I think it is. “SUPPA TENKO TIME! Enjoy the show Johnny!” Yukari adds as she vanishes as Ran’s outfit poofs into nothing. Quickly, I throw my blanket over Ran before turning my head.

>“That should cover you for now, don’t worry I didn’t peep. A real man wouldn’t need to resort to such a thing” I remark while remembering the swimsuit issue, heck that’s pretty close to getting an eyeful with some girls. “I guess I did some tempting of fate earlier,” I add.

>I look to see that Ran put on the blanket as she blushes. She then remarks, “I suppose it was. But I’m sure she would have done that anyways if you haven’t asked.” She smiles as she adds, “Thank you for not taking advantage of the moment. Now if you will excuse me I must find a replacement out”

I can’t read any more. It hurts.

Ah, yes, the good old 'anti-hero' protagonist who's actually a half-demon, but he's really an okay guy with a strong sense of honor, so of course all the ladies see past his gruff exterior and love him! This is beyond 'stereotypical self-insert'; it's like he's actually consciously trying to write shitty wish-fulfillment fiction.

Add in lines like
>"Hey let's invite him" I overhear one person pointing to me say. Another person goes "Nah, he's boring" as I continue to walk hastily, ignoring the crap.
and one begins to paint a rather depressing picture of Wiseman, the human being.

Ooh! Ooh! I've got one!

This is something that I absolutely loathe about all the stories on this site sans MiG and WUiG:

H-scenes.

What I absolutely loved about those two is that they weren't sex-obsessed romps through a land filled with sex-obsessed people. The recent stories reek of, as much as I loathe the term, normalfaggotry. I don't want to read about this world and these people but with lolmagic, I want to see a land where the people realize there's more important things in life.

There's something wonderful and magical when you can simply enjoy silly adventures Cirno, or chat idly with Reimu. I love the parts of stories where the the plot or goal is on the back burner, and there's just pleasant and enjoyable nothing.

I guess I'm just sick of writefags using drama and sex to try to make appealing stories instead of creating characters that are fun to interact with.

I know MiG was filled with pseudo-plot and drama, but the parts where you you could just talk with Reisen were some of my favorite moments in any story.

There's a point in here somewhere.

Which CYOA are you describing here? The only one I can think of that comes close is HLA's first run (and maybe R.I.M.'s story, but I haven't read that yet); none of the others are really anything close to this.

The rest of your post is a bit confused; you leave the topic of H-scenes entirely and explain that you dislike... plot? There's I, Youkai if you want slice-of-life, but it seems that you're against the idea of overarching story goals in general, which is a pretty dumb thing to be against.
No. 292
>>289
I think the "sex obsessed people" part is right at least. Look at GH. I'd say plenty of people fight in those threads over with girl to bang next.

The sex romp part seems to be like it's a result of CYOAs being frequently compared to VNs, eroge or not. Many eroge seem to have sex scenes tacked on, occasionally it seems more like it's there just as a reward instead of believable actions by the protagonist and heroine, added to the plot with little real justification (mana transfer), and then there's also just the sex romps. Even the VNs without sex still frequently have routes - Ever17 is not a "girl getting game" yet still has routes for each girl. I'd say that this just leads to be impression that CYOAs, which are compared to VNs, should also have routes with a specific touhou, and since so many VNs also throw in sex scenes, the CYOA should also have sex scenes with the preferred touhou (and maybe a few others...).

Honestly I find them stupid myself. I have more than enough porn. Like with eroge, I don't read stories on here for the porn; at best it's just a bonus, and in some rare situations it actually contributes to the plot. I wouldn't mind if the all ages version of some of my eroge were translated instead of the adult version, simply because the sex scenes typically feel like they were simply tacked on. Likewise, I don't care if a CYOA has an ero scene. However, it does get annoying when you see people voting for options with the ero scenes in mind; either which ever touhou they want to bang or to bang a touhou instead of not banging one.

Actually the arguments is romantic routes. The single sex scene was basically a fluke the author thought no one would call him on.

Some writers (such as Patchwork) are masters of the H-scene so that might influence things.

But the best stories here have such scenes naturally worked in (like in SDM:LA)

But in some cases considering all things, prudishness hardly works out, especially in this day and age where Anon is wary of reading a story that might just die any day now.

Due to things there's not many slice of life or random misadventure type stories these days.

So, what he meant was: 'I dislike forced sex scenes' If I'm right, I must ask: Wasn't easier just to say so?

Anyway, I agree. However, 'Forced' is an even more subjective concept than quality and I wouldn't want good stories to be deleted just because the author likes to write several h-scenes.

Balance, in all things.

>So, what he meant was: 'I dislike forced sex scenes'

No, that is not at all what I meant.

What I meant to say was "I hate how the userbase of this site is obsessed with sex scenes."

If I still believed that the posters here were primarily from /jp/, I'd say something about the hypocrisy of bitching about how women that sleep with more than two people are whores while being obsessed with nothing but sex scenes, but I'm starting to think one of the bigger problems on this site is the anonymous userbase being filled with faggots from Gaia, fanfiction.net, pooshlmer, and shrinemaiden.

oh my god why are my posts so terrible and autistic

Rephrased in a hopefully more coherent manner:

>So, what he meant was: 'I dislike forced sex scenes'

No, what I meant to say was "I hate how the userbase of this site is obsessed with sex scenes."
Also, only idiots like forced sex scenes. Forced sex scenes are by definition bad writing, and someone who wants poorly written smut over an engaging story is an idiot. What defines 'forced' is personal and even commenting on all this is dumb, why am I so moronic.

Also, I'm starting to think one of the bigger problems on this site is the anonymous userbase being filled with faggots from Gaia, fanfiction.net, pooshlmer, and shrinemaiden.

Personally, I think new people are fine; but is it so hard for them to lurk for a bit and get the general feel of the site instead of posting immediately and stupidly? In particular, I speak of the moron who posted 4918, 4919 and 4954 in the /at/ cosplay thread. If he had so much as glanced at the rest of the site, he would have seen that acting like that is a quick ticket to being labeled a massive faggot, but he seemed to have jumped in straight from pooshlmer without thinking that a different website might have different etiquette. Or what qualifies as etiquette in a place where racial slurs and frequent inquiries as to ones sexuality ran rampant, anyway.

tl;dr Those who are new around here, lurk a bit, get a general feel for how things work. Odds are, if you post and get run off by half the regulars calling you a faggot, it's probably because you were breaking more than one of the unspoken rules around here.
