Previous Rage Thread: >>17777

Why is it that people think there's some kind of "curse" on high school stories? Sure, none may have finished in the sites history, but that hardly means they are "cursed"!

Now THP...

THP is cursed when it comes to Trucks!

Elementary, my dear boy.

It all started with that infamous story called "Gensokyo High". The author, Taisa, went mad after all the shitstorms that had happened on his story. Thus, he cursed THP. Never again shall we have a finished high school story for if his story never finished, no one else's will.

And speaking of trucks, I hope Rumia gets run over by a truck!

Also, I thought the curse's gone now since we have Myouren Academy still alive and kicking.

>>18780
To be fair, the original Gensokyo High was a side-story that occurred inside a bigger story and that did turn out fine.

Then, he made a full-fledged spin off and that died horribly of Hiatus B. You know who you are.

Kira died in an accident with a truck.

Norseman was in a coma for, I think it was 18 months after a wreck.

Glen was hit as a pedestrian, though he wound up being fine and that isn't the reason he hasn't been writing.

Fuck trucks.

I was bored and curious, so I went into the storylist and tallied all of the stories under the completed and the shorts categories. I haven't been around THP for a terribly long time, so people who have gone under more than one name will probably listed as separate authors. If you notice that, feel free to correct me.

I may have gotten all of YAF's under one category, though. Probably.

Full-fledged CYOAs:
Authors with (1) completed story: Aeolist, Angerwing, Choja, ddyk, EZMode, Fell, HY, Jerl, Kirakishou, Krisslanza, LandScout, Luminous, Patchwork, Rabbit, SolusLunes, Teruyo, Twitty
Authors with (2) completed stories: Dr. Q, Keymaster, Klaymen, Owen, SLDT
Authors with (3) completed stories: Sukima
Authors with (7) completed stories: YAF
Additionally, there were (6) stories posted without a name, trip, or parent-story to identify them.
Total: 43

CYOAs that were finished within one thread:
Authors with (1) completed story: Snake, Kedama, Gekko, Shanghai, MSiG Writefag, Twitty, ddyk, Kahi, balistafreak, !T1e/DmU8Jg, BSD
Authors with (2) completed stories: Owen
Authors with (6) completed stories: YAF
Total: 19

Shorts
There were (46) authors who completed one short, (11) who completed two shorts, and (4) who completed three shorts. There were also 26 shorts posted without a name, trip, or parent-story to identify them.

Authors with (4) completed shorts: Mystia, !lggAzV5pXw
Authors with (7) completed shorts: Treia, Dr. Doujin, SLDT, Oracle, Moral
Authors with (8-12) completed shorts: Scorn(8), Patchwork(10), NewAgeRetroHippie(11), Taisa(11), W-I-T the 8th (12)
Authors with (13-20) completed shorts: Owen(15), EZMode(18), Sukima(19)
Authors with (21+) completed shorts: YAF(22)
Total: 255

This all comes to 62 completed CYOAs and 255 completed shorts, for a total of 317 completed stories of Touhou fanfiction on Tea Hat Party. Note that this is only based on the story list, so any stories that have been completed since its last update (which was in July, I believe?) are not accounted for in this tally.

Of these, YAF has written 35 of these works, making him the writer with the most completed fanworks on the site. Runner-ups are Sukima (22), Owen (19), and EZMode (19).

So basically, it took two hours or so of browsing fanfiction about magical girls to confirm that yes, YAF has a brilliant work ethic and a lot of time. I hope you enjoy this data.

Also, for the sake of curiosity:
Second runs stemming from completed stories that are abandoned or on hiatus:
Beautiful Killing Chamber 3, by YAF
Deluge of a Lunar Fantasy, by Teruyo
Expectation of Sanguine Disorder, by HY
Hakugyokuro LA, by Patchwork
I, Youkai / Phobe's Outing, by Klaymen
Misadventures in Gensokyo, by Kirakishou

Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne Touhou Edition, by Anonymous

Well that takes me back.

Also, speaking of rage, I’m sure you guys’ll be delighted furious to hear that I’m writing up a proof-of-concept scene (or two) for a High School AU just because my brain conjures up pretty cool ideas when it’s drying out. Seriously – every week I think “oh, I’ll get so pissed this Saturday and not write a single fucking thing!” some four or five fuckwits come out of the woodwork and vote in a story that was dead for two whole years before picking up out of the blue and should have been dropped long ago due to lack of interest.

So, what's the deal with the Lunar War actually? I heard two conflicting accounts about it. One says it actually happens and the Apollo missions were a coverup for that (also, who downed the rocket? Eirin or the Lunarians?) The other says it never happens and it's just the Lunarians (and Reisen) overreacting.

Also, did Eirin do all that shit in IN to hide Reisen from being forcibly taken back to the Moon?

IN was caused by Eirin trying to protect Kaguya from being dragged back to the moon, Reisen was just the incidental trigger for the incident.

SSiB hints at the Lunarians being behind various other things, such as the war that Kanako and Suwako's battle was a part of (they were backing Kanako's side), and the imprisoning of some other gods (including Lord Daikou, whose praises Tewi sings)

>>19334
No. I guess that ragepost may have been slightly misguided. I have no problem with people that are simply too busy to write, like HY or Klaymen or YAF. Or those that simply decide they're done writing and clearly state it.

I guess I was just mad at IRC AGAIN.

Because it hurts. I might not have been here from the beginning, even left for periods of time, maybe not read as many stories as I could have.
But I still read, voted, argued my votes, waited anxiously for updates, read some stretch of story over and over again while waiting anxiously for updates. Shit, it even prompted me to write, which is something I wouldn't have done in a million years if not for this place. I actually have more of emotional connection with this site and its stories than most things in my life I can think of, and I know I'm not supposed to actually care about anything on the internet but fuck that. So you know, I go ahead and enter #THP because I'm interested in touhou stories, and what do I see?

The same bunch of people that wrote those stories I enjoyed, and none of them seem to have any interest in any of that anymore. But they're still hanging around the chat connected to it for no reason at all. So I get to sit there and watch these guys sit around and jack each other off about the latest video game or giant robots or whatever, clearly not intent on involving themselves with touhou or writing ever again, not even to read it, or worse, brag and joke about how they haven't even opened the site in x months like it's a competition.

We all know the site is slowly dying, and its format and content are unique enough that I have scarce hope of ever seeing anything quite like it after Teruyo finally figures it's not worth the server bill anymore and shuts it down. And some of the few people that could have any hope of revitalizing it couldn't give a drop of piss about it. Yet they're still around, I guess to rub salt in the wound.

I should probably just leave the place and stop torturing myself like this, but there's those glimpses of hope, you know? when there's a 5 minute convo about some story or some writing thing before it's bulldozed by the latest anime thing.

Man. I just don't know anymore.

First of all, there was a thread a while back over on /gensokyo/ about the IRC.

Second, how much time do you spend on the IRC yourself? Do you participate in the conversations? If you just sit there and watch, you should have seen that we are a fairly close knit community and we try to have fun with each other. Hell, a group of us met up at Anime Weekend Atlanta a few months back.

Third, next time you say that the site is dying just think that you could be trying to do something other than whining. Sure, you say that you are writing, but how often do you update? If we have people updating, even if it's erratic, then we will have readers. Writers inspire readers, readers can tell their friends, friends can become readers and in turn writers. If you're too embarrassed to tell your friends that you're writing Magical Girl Fanfiction then don't complain about the site being "slow" or "dying" because you aren't making an effort to get more people here.

Fourth, I realize that it is a "Touhou Dedicated Channel" but that doesn't mean we have to talk about it 24/7. Shit gets old after a while. Think about how many "active" stories there are and then compare to how many people are on the IRC. It only takes so long for people to run out of things to say about a story they may or may not be interested in.

Finally, stop putting people on pedestals! You say they are, and I quote, "And some of the few people that could have any hope of revitalizing it couldn't give a drop of piss about it." Just stop. You want to know who can "save" THP? YOU! ANON! THE PEOPLE WHO ARE ACTUALLY WRITING! It isn't a group of asshats who gave up/became lazy/had a mental breakdown, but EVERYONE ELSE! Sorry guys, but if you aren't writing then people need to stop acting like you're still something special. You guys are cool, but they need to stop living in the past.

tl;dr Stop your bitching and do something about it. If you want people to talk about it on the IRC, then TALK! No one is stopping you! You won't get everyone involved, but you can still talk! And just let sleeping dogs lie! The dwelling on the past is, for a lack of better words, pointless and a waste of time.

Anyway, that is my spiel. Take it as you will.
Sorry if I'm coming off harsh but the whole "site is dying" mentality is infectious. When people see this mentality, they are put off of contributing.

That feel when #touhouporn actually talks about, you know, touhou porn, on a literally regular basis. Without it I probably wouldn't have ever come out of my early-in-the-thread slump and kept writing, I wouldn't have made the genderswap shorts thread and inspired others to create so much good content, etc.

So I really can't speak for the main #THP, I connect but never actually go in there to look at what they're talking about, it goes by too fast for me, but #touhouporn is legitimately stronk. People who actually write and create content, and we talk about a lot of lewd touhou shit. Regularly.

Not always, of course, sometimes DOTA or whatever is king, but nobody minds because before it has a chance to get old we're back to it.

The site sure doesn't feel like it's dying if you visit /at/ and #touhouporn and see the writers actually, you know, writing.

There's other THP-related IRC channels that have a higher chance of story discussion, such as #touhouporn. Sure they might not be as big but generally the active people in them are more mindful of the now than days long since passed.

Out of curiosity, I did check. I seem to be one of the little more than half dozen or so people updating more often than once a week. I have no friends, off or online, who are interested in Touhou. I often give stories I'm not reading second, third, fourth chances to see if I can get engaged and get voting. I'd happily give away one of my testicles if it'd revive this site. I think I'm doing everything I can, here. I thought about ponying up the 20 or 50 dollars and dropping an ad on /a/ or /jp/, but I'm really not in a position to spend money that isn't mine.
Maybe I'll do it anyway, eventually.

I'd be very happy if the 'site is dying' thing was really merely a mentality, but the admin himself reported a regular 14% drop in views per year for the site's entire lifetime.
It's a slow death that is and has been happening. It's a fact. Unless someone does something, it's going to keep dropping.

THe issues I see are a general decline in stories (mainly due to more people dropping than people making new ones that last), the general mentality of "i'm not good enough to write", and the general "things are dying" mindset that feeds itself.

>Are you really trying to tell me that the people in that channel have discussed touhou or writing so much that they've completely gotten sick of it and exhausted the topics of discussion?

I never said that we exhausted every possible topic, I'm just saying "shit gets old". Plain and simple. I used to play and talk about Skyrim all the time and now I don't. You know why? It's because it got old. Sure, I still talk about or pop it into the Xbox for an hour or two, but it doesn't consume my life like it once did. If you think about how long the IRC has been around, wouldn't it make a lot of sense for the people on there to be a little bored of it? I'm willing to bet that the Armored Core hype will die down again in a month or two, and then it will suddenly be back when someone new decides to play or when the next game comes out.

What it sounds like is that you want us to talk about Touhou until we're blue in the face and your ego is satisfied. As someone had said in #touhouporn, "why do you guys keep having a community if you are not writing for me". Now, that may have been said in #touhouporn, but the same person is pretty active in #thp.

Now, I'm not you, I don't know what you're thinking. I'm not going to pretend I do. But come on, Strawman, you seek magical answers for your Magical Girl Fanfiction. One person can't change the world, but they can make a difference. So either be that person, or just stop. It's up to you. This goes for the rest of Anonymous that likes to complain about the site dying and how nothing can be done to stop it.

>Who are you trying to fool?
Who are you trying to fool? I'm not trying to fool anyone. It isn't a matter of "He can be tricked into our way of thinking", it's a matter of, "How can we fix what has gone wrong and get this guy on board?" If you have complaints about something, make a scene in the IRC! You won't earn any friends by sitting here doing the same old shit that gets repeated every couple months.

Meanwhile, there are a bunch of good stories scattered over the boards that are in dire need of more attention and votes. And you still complain about lack of stories? Or is it just yearning for the writers of old?

Times have changed. Most of them have probably moved on from this fandom and are busy with other things. Others might have lost their spark of creativity and prefer to laze away their days, playing videogames. Good for them. But do not forget that, in their place, there appeared other new promises that put their all into writing interesting stories for a random bunch of strangers of the internet.

And yet all you do is cry for the Precursors. Who you know they won't write again no matter how much you yell at them. Seriously, stop being so picky and saying that this site is dying, and give the newbies a chance. Some of the veterans weren't even that good, anyway.

Writing discussion actually does happen on the IRC on a relatively regular basis, despite what you think. All that really is required for that to happen is for a writer to talk about it.

Of course, it won't start spontaneously because nobody on the IRC actually reads stories, but there you go.

>or worse, brag and joke about how they haven't even opened the site in x months like it's a competition.

And then there's this. I have done my best to stop that sort of thing, because it's actively toxic to the community. Pretty sure Taisa regularly puts me on ignore for tearing into him whenever he does this.

But >>19348 has the right idea. There are lots of good stories going on now that nobody reads because they're too busy going on /blue/ and bitching about how the old writers aren't writing. Here's what's going to happen:

A. They continue to not write, you continue to bitch without actually trying to improve things, and nothing gets done.
B. They continue to not write, you go and read stories that are currently running on the site and talk about them, and all things are happy.

Why not adopt a board? It is asking quite a lot to read all of the currently active stories on the site, but one can easily keep up with a single board, even /th/. Pick one. Or two! Hell, if you pick /eientei/, /shrine/, and /underground/, you can get all three for the relative speed of /th/ or /others/!

So adopt a board. Read all the stories on that board that are currently updating. Vote, even if it's a landslide for one option. Make the current writefags feel like it's worth writing, and maybe you'll find something worth reading.

Okay, you want rage? Here's my rage.

What the heck even is this whole "commit suicide -> enter Gensokyo" thing, darn it? Where does it come from? Why does it persist? Not only is it patently contradictory with established lore concerning Gensokyo and the afterlife, it's also nonsensical with regard to anything else, and doesn't have a shred of evidence in its favor.

Maybe it originated based on misconceptions regarding Yukari and the Road of Recollections both spiriting away suicidal people. But A) that's people who are suicidal, but have not yet killed themselves, and especially who are in places and times where their corpses wouldn't be easy to find if they did; and B) the print works in question are fairly clear that upon entering Gensokyo, the vast majority of them are devoured by stage enemies and other youkai, which seems like hardly the type of entrance anyone would even consider taking if they could possibly avoid it.

So, why is this something that people talk about?

He's probably making all of that just to make actual translators go translate something else, thinking "Eh, this guy's already doing it, so I should just translate some other things instead. Like that new Touhou rape doujin that just came out"

And I think he's an ex-brony now, since he also ragequitted the MLP fanbase sometime ago.

I hate cryptic choices. We readers have absolutely no idea what is each option supposed to mean, and personally I think it's just a way for the writers to railroad their stories while still giving us the illusion of choice. Now I know most of you claim this is not true, and I'm sure some of you writers actually do have several choices prepared for that situation, but it still feels to me like you're cheating your readers.

Same goes for the "roll dice"/"coin flip". How do I trust you are really leaving the choice to Luck, instead of you picking the option you like? I realize you usually do this to break a tie, which is even a worse situation, but...

Well, I could be acting too mistrusting of you guys when you don't deserve it, but I still despise that kind of choices. I just needed to let that out.

I try to avoid cryptic choices for this reason. Or, if I have to go the cryptic route, I'll leave clues nearby so that it's not completely cryptic.

As for coin flips... well, I'll be honest: I've cheated on one or two of those before. If I do cheat, I choose the best option for the story overall. I'd never make something bad happen; it would be unfair to punish Anon simply because I can choose the outcome of a tie.

Hers may not be the most difficult danmaku to get through, but nothing else in the Touhou series has quite as much raw power behind it as her patterns do, although some Seihou patterns come close or surpass it. The fact that she's only the 5th game's final boss says quite a lot for the importance of technique and beauty in Touhou-style danmaku.

You can even face charges for name calling in multiplayer games, something unheard of in the days when we encouraged people to an hero and posted gore with no restraint, even /b/ was the legendary brood mother of memes. THP is usually harsh because someone hates your guts (rare case) or because they find that they can only tell you how to write better through harsh criticism.
I'd like to point out an analogue in Dieter Bohlen from Germany's "America's got talent". He finds the harshest words for people that can't sing, destroying their dreams almost instantly, but for a good cause. The music industry, much like writing, is a very hard business to succeed in if the right people on top don't find you good enough.

Dieter said that he might have had technical talent, but his voice sounds awful unless he's falsetto. He was lucky to find someone pretty, Thomas Anders, who could only perform five tones well. Together they were two shitty singers, backed by catchy music, but at least they knew what they were good at: one at falsetto, the other at five tones in mid-range. Together they were Modern Talking, the most popular German act since the Nazi party.

They were only successful because they knew themselves well and got lucky. Those young people with mediocre talent and nothing else to stand out from the rest, though, they won't make the break.

tl;dr - harsh criticism usually hides good intentions, but that's the good impoliteness, most are already aware of that.

Second, the problem with writers not coming out to write is mostly performance anxiety. I know I have it, I can't write a single thing without fearing that it'll be a bunch of crap. Whenever I overcome that fear, I actually wrote, but then I lacked the persistence to keep going, for one reason or another.

Once I wrote myself into an imaginary dead end because I didn't know to write and pace a freaking birthday party. Next I got bombarded by anon in a fresh story, one persisted that my character was a Mary Sue, I couldn't defend it with anything, he'd just tear my arguments a new ass and turn them against me.

The wish to write remains. I've got ten story concepts in different stages of planning, some are just beginnings and endings without a proper middle, others are reconstructions of older stories that range from 150 to 1200 pages, one is a proper high school year dissected into sections with all possible ideas surrounding events. I made the latter for a possible Neo-GH, not that I have the guts to try that kind of stunt.

tl;dr - performance anxiety and sensitivity to criticism

That's why I think the attitude needs to be worked on: having standards is one thing but with how far THP took things, it's counter productive to getting new blood to give it a shot.

The best thing any would-be writer can do (here and everywhere else) is to learn how to recognise real feedback and be damn well ready to listen when they get it. Having a thin skin and getting defensive is a surefire way to make people dislike you personally, which will not bode well for your writing.

Also, THP's "standards" are really not that high. A story that's weak on the technical end can survive on its own merit by simply being interesting. All it really requires is a bare-minimum level of competence in putting a sentence together. Hell, if you don't have that, you can ask people for help. I think all but the most asshole-ish of anon are willing to accept that not everything is going to turn out as a brilliant masterpiece that shatters the literary world.

Dunno, the tales of Anon running amok on a story that fails to meet their standards are sort of infamous, even though these days there's not much in the way of such things (the closest was with that average joe story and the guy quit before that point)

Even when anon doesn't attack the writer they can cause shitstorms due to waifufaggotry. This puts a lot of pressure on the writer. Prime example: GH

You know what also puts a lot of pressure on a writer? People with a stubborn, almost pathological refusal to let shit go, who insist on sharing their sad and baffling inability to move on with everyone else who has.

I mean, honestly, what's worse: fucking up something in your first story, or having someone make a point of reminding you of your fuck-up at every chance they get, even if it happened years ago and you've long since learned from it?

It doesn't even have to be a fuck up, even making a great story results in a ton of pressure with later stories.

In order:
Hungry Youkai, one of the most prolific writers from the elder days of the site to relatively recently. He was one of the first to actually finish a story.

Retrospective and Astronomical Narration, a well liked story with a modern mafia type premise. The writer had it removed from the archive for some reason, but a few people still have the story in a downloadable form.

A Wizard is You, a Dungeons and Dragons crossover thing that became a hell of shitstorms and bitching. The story is now dead.

You could learn the answers to most of your questions by simply reading archived stories, checking the boards, and possibly visiting IRC. The site is perfectly fine if you simply read the rules, have coherent typing, and don't go around causing problems.

Also, the Questions for Veterans thread is over in >>18124. You can ask questions there if you need to.

I think it's time to create a new rage thread.

Not the acronyms man. Some of them are a pain if you aren't a regular. It's been years and I still blank on some of the abbreviated names.

may I ask what inspired that picture?

Who knows. I didn't draw it.
Found it in another thread either here or on /tg/.
Might be one of the drawfags on IRC.
